In the summer I keep two real windows open (cross breeze) and two virtual windows too.
That way I can google some neat links the same time I am responding to a poster.

I usually have quite a few open the three browsers Opera, firefox, and Maxthon each with anything from 10 to 20 tabs operating (with tabs there is no reason to have many windows for each browser open) and then five or six other windows usually a few for MS Word, a couple of notepads, a couple of p2p networks. Sometimes others such as PDF reader. But to have lots of tabs open in each browser one needs a lot of RAM I find they typically use up altogether about 350MB when I have 20 tabs open in each, of the three firefox is the worst RAM hog. My total RAM is 1GB (1000 MB).
