Welcome. I bet just writing the letter and getting it all out on paper made you feel better.
Did the newspaper tell you why they wouldn't publish it? I have written a few letters to my local paper and two out of three were published. The paper here has a limit of 200 words. If it is longer, they won't publish it due to space constraints. Perhaps your paper has similar rules? Just a thought.
