Hi Cabin;
Sorry, I'm not that familiar with , as I'm in Toronto, but below are a few sites you may want to take a look at. As you already mentioned, you can come up here for 6 months without having to do all the paperwork for citizenship, etc. and I would recommend that to see how you like it. If you go that route, don't forget that you're going to need Health Care coverage while you're up here. That shouldn't be too much as our services cost about 25% of American health services.

Another thing I forgot to mention is make sure your cellphone will work in Canada. My sister and BIL are going to the States in the Spring, and they had to get another cellphone---one that works in the States.
Not sure if you drink alcohol, but if you do, you may want to BYOB....our alcohol is regulated by the government, is very expensive and over half the price is taxes. I'm pretty sure Americans are allowed to bring alcohol across the border and they probably won't ask you. Rule is: If they don't ask you, don't volunteer any info.
If you do end up out in the woods, you should bring some pepperspray or something in case you run into bears or wolves. Each year there is the odd person who is killed by one or the other. I'm not saying that to scare you, but for your own protection.
And don't worry about the Dubs coming to find you. If there's no Tim Hortons (coffee shop) in the area, they won't be anywhere near you.

Just as there are many Canadian snowbirds - the same application applies to US visitors to Canada. I believe you are allowed to visit Canada or the USA legally for 6 months at a time. I have relatives that owned trailers in Florida and Arizona for years and left Canada to live down there every winter. It's very common. The Algonquin area is magnificent and there are many, many remote areas in Northern Ontario and the wilds of BC that you would enjoy if you like solitude. The further north you go in Ontario, the less expensive the housing will become as you move into the very small populated areas. Have some fun on your upcoming trip and enjoy your visit with friends. Forgot - I also don't know if you have to quarantine your pets - or if you simply have to provide proof of their vaccinations from a vet. Friends of mine travelling back and forth from England and Ireland shipped their animals all over the UK and I think they may have even relaxed the rules over there now so it's not a 6 month quarantine - finally. People that I know travelling with their pets, only have to prove vaccination if I recall unless they changed the rules on that too. sammieswife.

Sounds like On Walden Pond by Henry David Thoreau. He lived in a cabin he built himself and provided for his own needs next to Walden Pond. He said he wanted to reduce life to its most basic elements, so that when he died , he would be able to say he had experienced life in its purest form.
Always have been attracted to the idea. He was my favorite author in high school. I am sure a person would learn a lot about themself during such an experience. He eventually moved back to civilization, but always cherished that time he spent alone. Have fun and keep a journal. I am jealous.

I think its a geat area. Spent alot of time there in the 70's and early 80's. The only thing I would warn you about, is that the only problem with Canada, is that it's full of Canadians. ,
