What I find particularly hilarious and nauseous, is when Dateline confronts these low-lifes, they all swear up and down that they've "never done this before" and "this is the first time I've ever done this". You'd think that with all the stings Dateline has set up, that these sick wackos might think twice before they try and have sex with a 12 year old. After all, they're not the only ones who know how to lie over the internet.
WOW, Nina! I'm surprised they were right in Murphy.
This just happened last week?

This is just what I was going to say! It's amazing that they all sound as if they've been handed a script to all have and repeat the same excuses! .....and the sincerity of how "contrite" they are is so interesting!

Yep. About 2 blocks from our house.
I was really disappointed I couldn't go as I would have loved to have gotten up and given my two cents worth (which is about all it's worth).
What I don't like is the media's portrayal that the divide in Murphy is an even split. It's not. There are a handful of loudmouth whiners and then there's 90% of the rest of us.
One positive that came out of this was that the mayor, pushed by the loudmouth whiners, was demanding the resignation of the city manager and the police chief. But because of the tremendous display yesterday by several hundred people who vigorously supported the operation, he said he was going to drop that demand.
Chris
As an addendum, when Nina and I sent an email one of the city councilmen sent out a form letter via email. I'm going to post it, along with our reply after.
Here's his form letter email:
First off, I don't think you will get anyone on council to disagree we need to take this people off the street.I do disagree with the methods. I would like to know why we would rather work with Perverted Justice and not our own Attorney General. I would like to know, with our limited staff, why we aren't working with the area Crimes Against Children units in departments such as Dallas, Plano, Richardson, etc.
I think you will find the residents of Murphy would fully support a Crimes Against Children unit with their pocket books. One that stays around after the cameras stop rolling. One that works with agencies in North Texas and at the state level.
I'm trying to find answers for the families that live across the street who's children witnessed suspects being taken down in the front yard for TV ratings. Anyone of these arrests could have taken place in the house. But it doesn't make good TV.
I'm concerned about the two that fleed the scene and were aprehended miles away from the sting operation. One that made it across the entire city limits and had to be arrested in Richardson. A vehicle being chased by a Lincoln Continental with two police officers with nothing more than hazards on (no emergency lights). I'm concerned about the bag of cocaine that was thrown out the window and found by a Murphy resident after a car fled the scene (which shows how inadequately under staffed the operation was).
I'm concerned about the residents whose families were traveling High Point Dr during this sting on their bikes, some as young as toddlers. What if one of these suspects like the ex-DA that commited suicide felt entrapped enough they should take a hostage in an attempt to escape?
I am concerned about the resident, who during the sting, called 911 to report someone beating on their front door trying to get in their house and waited 10 minutes before a police officer showed up. A resident that lived less than a mile from the sting operations staffed with the majority of the Murphy Police Department.
I'm not disagreeing with you... we should take this section of the population off the street. I disagree with the methods employed this go round.
Here is our reply:

Forgive me, but I was not aware that the Murphy police department refused to work with the Attorney General, or Crimes Against Children. Do you have any evidence to support this allegation? Why does it have to be an either/or situation? Why we can't we do both? And when you say "work with the Attorney General", what specifically did you have in mind? Does it really matter how a sex offender is caught, whether it is through the efforts of "our" Attorney General, or through the efforts of someone from outside Texas?
As I mentioned in my email, one thing I support about this "method" is the very bright light being shone on a real problem. Child abuse thrives in the quiet and dark. As we have learned from previous decades of behavior, keeping child abuse quiet only serves to make the problem worse. It's not just about arresting online predators, it's also about bringing local, regional and national attention not only to child abuse, but also to the very real threat of online predators. As I mentioned in my email, we here in little Murphy have already seen arrests and this was before Dateline came here.

Again, I don't see why this has to be an either/or situation. I don't see that Dateline ever made any claim about offering a long term solution. They came here to shine a light on a real problem and in the process arrested 21 sex offenders. I see no benefit to criticizing the police, for doing an outstanding job.
Perhaps it will take something like having a national media outlet come to Murphy to shock people into realizing the need for full-time attention to this problem.

Are you accusing the police of deliberately putting people in danger just to satisfy Dateline's ratings? Is it your position that the Murphy police department deliberately put the possible demands of a television show over and above the safety of the citizens of that neighborhood?
At this point, I would be interested in hearing their rationale for making the arrests outside the home versus inside. At this point, I'm willing to give the police the benefit of the doubt. Just thinking out loud for a moment, but there might be safety concerns or even legal issues that make it more advantageous to make the arrest outside. At this point, absent a statement from the police, I think it is extremely irresponsible of you to make this assertion. If you have any proof to back up your accusation, I for one would be very interested in listening.

I'm concerned as well. However, I'm willing to guess that there have been occasions in the past when police have chased a suspect. I'm also willing to guess that there have been arrests made on drug possession.
I don't like it one bit. But again, these are dangerous individuals who were arrested. They did not get away. I think you are again making a very irresponsible statement by stating that the operation was understaffed. What data and facts do you have to back up this statement? Do you have any evidence that the Murphy police department held back officers or that they knew the operation was understaffed and potentially dangerous?
If you feel we have too few police officers, what are you and the mayor going to do about it? How many new officers are you in favor of?

Wait a minute. You just said the operation was "understaffed." Now you're complaining about the operation being staffed "with the majority of the Murphy Police Department."
What is your position here exactly? Are you criticizing the police for putting too many officers on this operation or too few? You can't have it both ways.
****************************************
I'm not disagreeing with you... we should take this section of the population off the street. I disagree with the methods employed this go round.

Then we'll have to agree to disagree. I would not support this type of operation on a long-term or consistent basis. But as a one-time sting operation, I think it was a tremendous success. There are now 21 fewer predators in our area. The residents of Murphy, and most likely the surrounding towns, now realize it does happen here. This is a problem in little Murphy, and quite frankly the rest of the country. We are not insulated or protected by where we live.
Murphy, Texas will have a reputation because of this operation. The other area I strongly disagree with you on is I think our police did an outstanding job and deserve praise for their work. They made a real difference this past weekend. I'm sorry, but I think that's got to count for something.
Be well,
Chris
i'm glad so many turned up at the meeting!
the more open the news is about the perverts and whatever means they have to take to catch them is ok with me. child predators have lived for way too long under the cloak of silence. expose as many as you can and even more importantly expose how they operate and reach our children so we're better equipped to protect our kids!
Way to go Chris and Nina!!!
I saw the hullabalew about this on the news and my hat is off to you and Chris! I think those ilk need to be arrested immediately when they show up at these homes. After all this is a disgusting crime against children and the public needs to be aware of where these people are and no neighborhood is safe.
What amazes me is the number of people who would rather stick their heads in the sand and not know. Trying to talk to someone who's like that is almost exactly like talking to a JW apologist.
