Since we never got Rodney's shows over here, I didn't realise this until I saw a biography of Rodney that he did a series of shows or specials where Roseanne played his loud-mouthed verbally abusive wife in some sketches. She went on to do her own show later.
This has often been the case - we'll get some personality arrive full-blown over here and not know where the heck they came from. Best example is the Seinfeld show. When it first arrived here, he was billed as the funniest man in America, which was kind of pointless, because we'd never heard of him. It wasn't until years later when we got SNL reruns on paytv that I put two and two together. Same with Adam Sandler.
