Sorry to hear about your trip to the ER. I hope you are home recovering nicely.

Yes, it is a bit shocking when something from our JW past surfaces and hits us in the face when we least expect it.

It's maybe a good reminder for us to re-think our stance on blood and rescind any old Advance Medical Directives that may be on file with our physicians and local hospitals. I had an 'incident' last summer and it was very, very difficult to get it rescinded during and after my admittance. I was on my way down to have some emergency vascular work done when I *finally* got someone to bring me a new AMD.

Update it now, before it's too late.

-Denise. (aka: AudeSapere - meaning Dare to Know; Dare to Think for Yourself!)

Sorry to hear about your visit to the ER....

But now is the time to start educating your mind and your heart what your decisions are regarding medical treatment. BTW, do you have a health care proxy? Lawyers can be the worst about this. Don't let a family member have to guess what you want.

Love, Blondie (who felt queasy the first time she gave approval)

Good for you for speaking up. Doctors are supposed to inform you if they believe you are going to need blood and you're supposed to be able to give consent for any blood products, as long as you are conscious. The only time you can get blood without explicit consent is when you are unconscious, and the law allows health care professionals to assume that you would want to be treated; this is known as implicit consent.

Aude and Blondie are right about this being a good time to think through your personal convictions and make an informed decision about blood and blood products. Unlike the knee-jerk JW phobic reaction to blood that you seem to have experienced, if you consider the facts about blood transfusions, you will have made a truly informed choice, rather than one based on fear-based doctrine from a book publishing company.

Sorry you had to go to hospital, and I hope you're ok now.

Updating my medical records is something I neglected to do when I first left, even though I work at a hospital. It was Trev who reminded me, and I did it then. I'm still not sure of how I feel about blood though, and I hope the situation doesn't arise where I might need it.

    Ditto.

If you haven't read Kerry Louderback's essay "JW's, Blood Transfusions and the Tort of Misrepresentation" in the Dec. 2005 issue of Journal Church and State, I strongly suggest you do.

Hope you're feeling lots better, Orbi!

This was what happened to me last summer! I went in for what was supposed to be a quick surgical procedure at 3:00 PM to be discharged the next morning....and I was kept heavily sedated for the better part of two weeks! I was told after everything was all said and done....that I had been given two units of blood!

I had to stifle a giggle because the doctor who told me this had no clue about my past lunacy in being a JW, or that I would have died rather than accepting bood only a few years ago!

    hugs,

    Annie
