I can't understand it, I will never understand it. This is what shelters are for. There are organizations out there to help. How can you stay and let him torment you and your children this way?
If your kids resent you for anything later...it will be that you let their fathers drinking control all your lives while they were growing up and didn't do anything to get them out, get them safe. Believe it.

You need professional help and likely a police escort to get away from this man. 20 years of his drinking is 20 years too long.
