Could the latest "anti-porn" campaign by the Society have a 2nd purpose?

Ah, good point Gill. Didn't think of that. Did you say permanetly? So there's no way of getting rid of stuff from a hard drive?? At all?

"The July 15 Watchtower has a big (3 page) Questions From Readers on porn,..."

Three pages devoted to a question from a reader?!! Theat is unheard of! Three pages is getting close to the lenght of a study article, usually questions from a reader might get 1/2 or 3/4 of a page tops.

This must have become a sensitive topic in recent years for The Watchtower to devote so much space to it.

The only purpose it serves is to demonise the internet so as to discourage the dubs as much as possible from using it the idea being that they will also not look at apostate sites.

That was due to the pullout centerpage photos

But supose he can no longer stomach the demands made on elders. His conscience no longer allows him to support the Society's mandates, but he's not yet ready to DA himself. Wants to fade, but just can't be an elder any more.

He informs the BOE, and steps down. The BOE will certainly not say "Brother Good-Conscience has a problem with the Slave's teachings". If anyone asks, they'll just say "There's some things that must remain confidential."

So, in the minds of all the R&F, they're putting 2 and 2 together, thinking, "Hmmm...recent article on hard-core child porn...X weeks or months later, Brother Joe is no longer an elder...yep, that's it."

In every congregation I was in, when an elder stepped down, it was announced as such: "Brother Notanelder has stepped down as an elder," or somesuch. A time or two, there were comments included in the talks surrounding the announcement about the gratitude the brothers felt toward the particular ex-elder and how much they regretted seeing them leave. When my Dad stepped down, it was announced so that everyone knew it was a voluntary "retirement" - a number of publishers pulled him aside to tell him how much they wished he'd come back and to try and convince him to do so.

The conspiracy theory would only work if the announcement/procedures have changed - have they?

stillA - There are products out there that can permanently cover your tracks, but I don't know how to do so without them. I delete what I can see from my machine, but there's often a cache somewhere that I can't find that's storing stuff.

    stillAwitness,

There are tools available for cleaning up Internet history and even for "grinding" up the file space where certain files had been stored. Obviously there are many types of jobs where security concerns are at a premium (accountants, investigation, etc.) and tools have been developed that make it easy to erase the electronic steps you've taken for most purposes except an all-out attack on your privacy by the NSA (National Security Agency). Hopefullly, that last is unlikely?

One such tool is "Internet Cleanup" by Aladdin Systems, Inc. It has an excellent reputation. But there are other tools that perform similarly, with the main variance being ease of use or level to which the utility "digs" through the system to follow your clean-up instructions.

    Respectfully,
    AuldSoul

I posted this on another thread about the letter to the BOE about elders/MSs and porn:

"...a deeper, more conspiratorial idea crossed my mind. What if, say Joe Publisher is surfing the net, looking up info about a medical procedure he's going to undergo and he "inadvertantly" came across a dirty picture. He immediately closes the image but later while in field service he mentions in passing to Brother Bigshot that while surfing the net he came across the image and was disgusted at how easy it was to access this.

Brother Bigshot, an elder, remembers the new counsel and calls together some other elders and they then follow whatever procedure as dictated by the WTS. They meet with Joe, tell him he's not in trouble, but since he "saw" the image, they have to give him counsel. Along the way, not only do they counsel him about porno, but about his use of the Internet.

Bingo! There it is. Another way of policing the use of the Internet by the friends from the WTS. If they can come up with all this crap about what is or isn't uncleanness or major consequence in viewing porn, and knowing that most people with a front to uphold are going to view their porn online, then this allows them an inroad on how to monitor what habits the JWs have with using the Internet.

Of course, it won't work with the fringe dubs whose conscience is not properly trained by the WTS, but those who try to be good little dubs but fall short and run to the elders every time they whack off to a picture of a girl making come-hither faces and has her top off, it's going to scare them away from the Internet altogether. And that's what they want."

The fact that porn is such a problem means that the dubs are not adhering to the counsel about avoiding the Internet. If they're willing to look at porn on-line, wouldn't it follow that looking at "spiritual porn" would soon follow, if not already being viewed?

And another thing...what constitutes "porn"? What if the WTS declared anything as anti-JW as "pornographic"? Then they could start a witch hunt in wiping out all that would even dare consider on-line information about the religion. It starts with a cracking down on something that most conservative religious people would consider harmful, sexual pornography and then in time the same tactics could be used to weed out anyone who views the new "spiritual pornography" with the same results...elders and MSs removed, pioneers removed and if they persist in "viewing" it, DFing.

I have a family member who works in the computer/security industry and they say that a professional can find anything that was ever on your hard drive. Your hard drive can be "wiped" clean and this would prevent all but the most proessional, but even then, if the info was ever on your hard drive, itcan be acessed.. that was they say.

What if the real motive was to demonise the Internet altogether as the common medium of both porn and "apostasy"? The general (although often hypocritical) reprobation of the former being the ideal cover for their unavowable fear of the latter... hmm?

I'm with Nark - the most effective tool used by the WTS is guilt.

Their goons really don't have time to monitor people's computers, to follow them around to see what kind of movies they go to, who they hang out with, hide under their beds to see if they masturbate, etc. So what have they always done? Brainwashing 101. Get the subject to censor AND censure his own thoughts! And I agree that the real target is apostasy.

Porn is fairly benign (in this context) and does not necessarily decimate the ranks. But apostasy is a huge threat and is making inroads into the membership on a daily basis. You can't "view" apostasy and be a R & F robot for very long. The internet is the most formidable enemy the WTS has ever known. You better believe they are fighting it every way they can.
