On John 1:1, the text quotes from James Donaldson, a recognized authority.

Sir James Donaldson (1831-1915) was Principal of the United College of St Andrews University from 1886 until 1915 and was an eminent scholar in biblical, theological and classical subjects, as well as being a respected educationalist. He served as Senior Principal of the University until 1890, thus being, in effect, Principal of the whole University. His position was endorsed through the terms of the Universities (Scotland) Act of 1889. He then served as Principal of the University from 1890 to 1915.

He was born in Aberdeenshire and studied at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College, Aberdeen, then New College, London and the University of Berlin. He returned from Germany in 1852 and was appointed assistant to the professor of Greek in the University of Edinburgh. In 1854 he became Rector of Stirling High School. In 1856 he was appointed Classical Master at the Royal High School in Edinburgh and its Rector in 1866. He was made LL.D. by Aberdeen in 1865 and became Professor of Humanity there in 1882, moving to St Andrews in 1886.

He wrote widely on Greek, Classical and Theological subjects, publishing a Modern Greek Grammar as early as 1853. He is well known for his Critical History of Christian Literature and Doctrine from the death of the Apostles to the Nicene Councils (1864-66). He was joint editor of the Ante-Nicene Christian Library in 24 volumes (1867-72). He was active in University reform. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was knighted in 1907. He was awarded an LL.D by Glasgow and an honorary D.D. by Aberdeen in recognition of his work in Church History.

    Charles Voysey, theist

Charles Voysey (1828 - 1912 was an English Anglican minister who was condemned by the Privy Council for heresy and went on to found the Theist Church.

Voysey was sacked from the curacy of St Mark's, Whitechapel, having denied the doctrine of eternal punishment. He then became curate of Healaugh, Yorkshire, but soon ran into difficulties there. He was prosecuted by the William ThomsonArchbishop of York for heresy starting in 1869. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council gave their judgement in 1871:

The Appellant is charged with having offended against the Laws Ecclesiastical by writing and publishing within the diocese of London certain sermons or essays, collected together in parts and volumes, the whole being designated by the title of "The Sling and the Stone," in which he is alleged to have maintained and promulgated doctrines contrary and repugnant to or inconsistent with the Articles of Religion and Formulariesof the Church of England.

His appeal against this conviction was dismissed and Voysey lost his benefice. He went to London and founded the Theistic Church of London.

He befriended Guy Aldred as he became the Boy Preacher in Holloway in 1903. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Voysey%2C_theist"

JOHN 1:1 “…the Word was with God (ho theos) and the Word was God (theos).”

99% of scholars who know Greek are in disagreement w/ the Watchtower translation of John 1:1.

The Word (Jesus) is God : John 20:28; Titus 2:13

    Only one true God : John 17:3; Deut 32:39; Isaiah 43:10; 44:8; 45:5

There are not two Gods, but one true God.

The Greek word theos (God) w/o the definite article ho (the) is used in Luke 20:38 of Jehovah in the New Testament with the same Greek construction used of Jesus in John 1:1.

If Jesus was only divine in nature and not God, John would have used the word theios (divine, deity) and not theos (God). One must be consistent with their translation. The Watchtower is not consistent in the application of their rule in which they claim to translate John 1:1 as “…a God” (theos without the definite article ho) in the NWT.

Other scriptural examples of theos without the definite article ho, used of God (Jehovah) are: Matt 5:9; 6:24; Luke 1:35,78; 2:40; John 1:6,12,13,18; 3:2,21; 9:16,33; Rom 1:7,17,18; 1 Cor 1:30; 15:10; Phil 2:11,13; Titus 1:1

    Interesting.

Actually I think monotheism vs. polytheism is a false dichotomy as far as the Gospel of John is concerned. If we don't drop the idea of the one creator God separate from his creation to a more open, inclusive, embracing notion of "God" the very point of John's Gospel remains incomprehensible.

More contradictions and circular reasoning in mdb's post than a typical watchtower.

    99%??? Prove it.

Prove it. I don't see any contradictions or circular reasoning in what I've posted. Give an example. If you don't like the statistic (99%), disregard the statement - maybe it's 85%. It doesn't really matter in this case and of course I can't prove that number is correct. Besides, it's not necessary. The Scriptures speak for themselves. Look them up. The Watchtower's translation is not consistent and goes against the context of the Scriptures as a whole. Being that God does not contradict Himself, and other passages indicate the Jesus Christ (the Word) is God, then the NWT is erroneous in translating John 1:1 as "...a god". The NWT translation supports polytheism (more than one god). Do you believe there is more than one true God? No JW will aknowledge it, but they must believe it unless they believe Jesus was a false god (which they also will not aknowledge to be correct, and rightfully so). Jesus is not a "mighty God" while the Father is the "Almighty God". What does that say? The Father is also called a "mighty God". Does that mean He is not "Almighty God"? Of course not.
