No I haven't been smoking weed, but here's my take on it...
maybe the apple was the process of genetically modifying humans, the apple which they had to take (steal) of their own free will, due to the fact that there was a possiblity that increasing our *knowledge of good and bad* could lead to the eventual destruction of all human kind millenia later.

They did die: spiritually. When you read a text with a strict, literal wooden view you get little understanding. Not only did they die but all of their future offspring would die in their own sins until the advent of the long foretold messiah.
