Nic, taking religion and God out of the equation this is what these men did. They we're theists, they believed in God but didn't believe in God having a direct influence in their affairs.

The context deals with being equal in having life, enjoying that life and to be at peace. In simple terms its as 1 Thess.4:11 says, "...and to make it your aim to live quietly and to mind your own business..."

Reminds me of the Trinity teaching. There is a difference depending on whether a person is discussing the ontological or economical situation.
Ontologically all men are equal, you are as important as the next person, regardless of their station in life. Economically though people are of different value. Some people excel in certain areas, and so are not equal to others, whether they be a great husband, father, golf player or leader of a country.
That is why the death penalty is so debatable. Some truly evil people deserve to die, but why did they turn out that way. They were born ontologically equal to others but somewhere along the line things went wrong. Why, was it bad upbringing, mental disease, genetic malfunctioning? Are they to blame for such things?
