Loreena McKennitt. Beautiful, haunting, ethereal songs with lyrics that recall us to our roots in mother earth, our roots in our ancestors, our heritage in our land, people and customs.

    All Souls Night

    Bonfires dot the rolling hills
    Figures dance around and around
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
    Moving to the pagan sound.

    Somewhere in a hidden memory
    Images float before my eyes
Of fragrant nights of straw and of bonfires
And dancing till the next sunrise.

I can see lights in the distance
Trembling in the dark cloak of night
Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing
A waltz on All Souls Night.

Figures of cornstalks bend in the shadows
Held up tall as the flames leap high
The green knight holds the holly bush
To mark where the old year passes by.

    Bonfires dot the rolling hillsides
    Figures dance around and around
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
And moving to the pagan sound.

Standing on the bridge that crosses
The river that goes out to the sea
The wind is full of a thousand voices
They pass by the bridge and me.

    Night Right Across the Caucasus

    Ride on
    Through the night
    Ride on

    Ride on
    Through the night
    Ride on

There are visions, there are memories
There are echoes of thundering hooves
There are fires, there is laughter
There's the sound of a thousand doves

In the velvet of the darkness
By the silhouette of silent trees
they are watching; they are waiting
    They are witnessing life's mysteries

Cascading stars on the slumbering hills
They are dancing as far as the sea
Riding o'er the land, you can feel its gentle hand
    Leading on to its destiny

Take me with you on this journey
Where the boundaries of time are now tossed
    In cathedrals of the forest
In the words of the tongues now lost

Find the answers, ask the questions
Find the roots of an ancient tree
Take me dancing, take me singing
I'll ride on till the moon meets the sea

    Marrakesh Night Market

    They're gathered in circles
    The lamps light their faces
The crescent moon rocks in the sky
    The poets of drumming
    Keep heartbeats suspended
The smoke swirls up and then it dies

    Would you like my mask?
    Would you like my mirror?
Cries the man in the shadowing hood
    You can look at yourself
You can look at each other
Or you can look at the face
    The face of your god

    The stories are woven
    And fortunes are told
The truth is measured by the weight of your gold
    The magic lies scattered
    On rugs on the ground
Faith is conjured in the night market's sound

    Would you like my mask?
    Would you like my mirror?
Cries the man in the shadowing hood
    You can look at yourself
You can look at each other
You can look at the face
    The face of your god

    Lessons are written
    On parchments of paper
They're carried by horse from the river Nile
    Says the shadowy voice
    In the firelight, the cobra
Is casting the flame a winsome smile

    Would you like my mask?
    Would you like my mirror?
Cries the man in the shadowing hood
    You can look at yourself
You can look at each other
Or you can look at the face
    The face of your god

    Samain Night

When the moon on a cloud cast night
Hung above the tree tops' height
You sang me of some distant past
That made my heart beat strong and fast
Now I know I'm home at last

You offered me an eagle's wing
That to the sun I might soar and sing
And if I heard the owl's cry
Into the forest I would fly
And in its darkness find you by.

And so our love's not a simple thing
    Nor our truths unwavering
But like the moon's pull on the tide
Our fingers touch, our hearts collide
I'll be a moonsbreath by your side

    "The God That Failed"-Metallica
    "What If"-Creed
    "Baba" and "Sympathetic Character"-Alanis Morrisette
"Sweet Transvestite"-Tim Curry for Rocky Horror Picture Show
These are my picks...I really wonder though, what the expressions on faces would be if "Sweet Transvestite" came blaring over the speakers? Would they laugh, would their faces turn red? I know I would torn between laughing and singing.

Awwww...I'd give anything to sing Ave Verum Corpus over the whole WTBTS as they fall to the ground; GB included.

For those who don't know...that is a funeral piece by Mozart.

Eternal Life, it could ONLY be that song for me...

by Jeff Buckley, on the album 'Grace' and the EP 'Live at the Sine-E'. Done harder and thashier live.

The lyrics are perfect apart from the 'Racist everyman...' bit, but that could be changed, although poor old Jeff ain't around to sing it any more...

    Eternal Life

Eternal Life is now on my trail
Got my red glitter coffin, man, just need one last nail
While all these ugly gentlemen play out their foolish games
There's a flaming red horizon that screams our names

And as your fantasies are broken in two
Did you really think this bloody road would
    Pave the way for you?
    You better turn around
and blow your kiss hello to life eternal, angel

Racist everyman, what have you done?
Man, you've made a killer of your unborn son...
Crown my fear your king at the point of a gun
All I want to do is love everyone...

And as your fantasies are broken in two
Did you really think this bloody road would
    Pave the way for you?
    You better turn around
and blow your kiss hello to life eternal....

There's no time for hatred, only questions
What is love, where is happiness, what is Life,
    where is peace?
When will I find the strength to bring me release?

And tell me where is the love in what your prophet has said?
Man, It sounds to me just like a prison for the walking dead
And I've get a message for you and your twisted hell
You better turn around and blow your kiss goodbye
    to life eternal angel...

Kingdom Hall... didn't know there WAS a Van song of that name, but what was he thinking of when he wrote these lyrics??

    Kingdom Hall
    (Van Morrison)
    So glad to see you
    So glad you're here
    Come here beside me now
    We can clear inhibition away
    All inhibitions
    Throw them away
And when we dance like this
Like we've never been dancin' before

Quite obviously Van hasn't been to one, OR it was VERY different, or he's on drugs.

Clearing inhibitions and dancing is NOT what goes on there...

    Chorus:
    Oh, they were swingin'
    Down at Kingdom Hall
    Oh, bells were ringin'
    Down at the Kingdom Hall
    A choir was singin'
    Down at the Kingdom Hall
    Hey, liley, liley, liley
    Hey, liley, liley, low
Do do do do do do, do
Do do do do do do
Do do do do do do, do
Do do do do do do

Bells? Choirs? Nope, and definately no 'Hey, liley, liley, low
Do do do do do do, do'

    Good body music
    Brings you right here
    Free flowin' motion now
When we're shakin' it out on the floor
    Good rockin' music
    Down in your shoes
And when we dance like this
Like we've never been dancin' before

Nope, I think it's the drugs talking...

    Repeat Chorus

    Down at the Kingdom Hall
    They were havin' a party
    They were havin' a ball
    Bells were ringing out
    And the choir was singin'
    Hey, liley, liley, liley
    Hey, liley, liley, low
Do do, do do, do do, do do
    Sugar was there
    Did you see Sugar
    Down at the Kingdom Hall
    Sugar was tough

Well, unless this entire thing is metaphorical, or he's actually being ironic, this song, lyrically, is a load of pants.

Yellow matter custard makes far more sense...

Which CD? Easy: Limp Bizkit, Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water. Which track: #6, "Rollin' (air raid vehicle)". If you haven't heard the song, the lyrics don't much matter, but I guarantee you this lovely and inspirational tune would cause at least a few premature heart attacks.

Or maybe just for fun, "Start the Commotion" by The Wise Guys.

    "Wire it up, baby!"

    *Rochelle, fun-loving class.
