My JW wife wanted to throw a costume party. Any advice.

To all active and former witnesses (elders especially), I have a question.

My wife wanted to throw a costume party and invite people that she knows who has kids. She indicated that she wanted to include her witness friends as well. However, given the fact that we are in the month of October and costume parties in this month are associated with Halloween, she did not know how to throw a costume party without making it look like a Halloween party. She wanted to make it sort of like a Fall Festival but she clearly sees how others will take it as a Halloween type of bash.

I told her that the local churches tend to do something similar. Have Fall Festivals so that the people who go can have an outlet for this kind of stuff without actually going to a 'Halloween Bash.' I know, I know, it sounds a bit hypocritical and frankly I just go ahead and celebrate Halloween. However, my wife is scared of it in a way due to her feeling like she could be possessed by demons and such. Many Christians feel this way too so I don't find this as ridiculous (given my beliefs) as her thinking she will die for putting up a Christmas tree. However, I know non-religious people will see that as being ridiculous too.

So what do you think? Does she have a chance in even remotely pulling it off or no friggin way possible? Is there anything she could change to make it not seem like a Halloween costume party? She already figured that if she had planned this in the summer then it would look less like a Halloween party. But hey, who has costume parties in the summer?

Anyway, on a side note. A man in our prayer group invited me to his church Wednesday night before Halloween where they are having safe trick or treating. They ask that the kids not wear costumes that are occultic in any way. I told him about a time when a church I use to attend had a costume contest and asked that they all dress as Bible characters. The winner of the costume contest? A little boy of about 3 who dressed as a devil. The man in our prayer group did not like that too well, but hey, isn't the devil a Bible character?

Incidently, since it is already so close to Halloween now, I doubt my wife will have this party for she sees no point in doing it in November.

I've always wondered what it would feel like to impersonate a demon possesed person.

Can I attend as a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses?

Just tell everyone they have to dress as Bible characters or modern-day witnesses. Like the "drama" at the conventions.

The WT Society has advised against this, using their trump card of it being "wordly".

Jehovah's Witnesses are NO PART of the world.

Yes, according to the WBTS any party is a big no no....

Invite some elders from your wife's kingdom hall and some elders from other kingdom halls, along with the Circuit Overseer. Let it be a REAL party!

JW's who turn up will leave.

It's just the wrong season - perhaps wait till late December and have a white bearded costume party? or a Lapland theme?

We have been to a couple of costume parties for the kids over the years ... always during the summer. I can't imagine getting away with this so near Halloween, even if your wife is okay with it, the gossip and shock over such brazenness is sure to happen. I would also anticipate a talking to by an elder.

Been there, done that... got counseled.

Well, not me so much but people in the hall I was in. A couple of sisters organized a costume party. It happened to be in early October. Truthfully, these two didn't even think about Halloween...they were just trying to find a fun thing to do.

The party was a hit actually. Some great costumes (even the dweebs that dressed as David or Moses). Even elders joined in.

    But then -

The CO's visit came a couple of weeks later, even closer to Halloweeen (fitting now that I think about it). Anyhoo - he heard about the party and had a meeting with the elders and chewed them out for allowing it. The two sisters were privately counseled, they gave a local needs talk on avoiding celebrations of the world and that was the last costume party held in that congregation.

    Hey gary,

it sounds like your wife wants to enjoy life

unfortunately, if her enjoyment don't fall up under

the WT guidelines, she may get in trouble with

    the elders.
