During the Gilead School graduation exercises, September 7, 1975, Fred Franz admitted to the students and their families that no Governing Body existed during the time of the apostles, nor one since then. He had already concluded that the doctrine of a Governing Body from the days of the apostles to the present was a false teaching. As Franz revealed the unscriptural nature of the doctrine, his audience sat in bewildered silence. The Apostle Paul, he stated, was appointed by Jesus Christ personally, not by any governing body in Jerusalem. In fact, no one in that city was aware of his appointment.

This admission - contrary to official WT teaching of a primary belief - has never been published. Yet, in the December 15, 1975 WATCHTOWER, we read of another speech by Franz, in which he PROMOTES the doctrine of the Governing Body.

Knorr's Attitude Toward the "Oracle"'s Getting Prophecy Right

Upon his deathbed, Rutherford designated Knorr as the new president, whereupon Knorr let it be known to Franz that he did not want to be caught in prophecy failures as Russell and Rutherford had. It so happens that, as history unfolded and left a huge blank, Knorr was known to be disgusted with Franz over the failure of the 1975 prediction.

There are many who feel that his disgust with the pseudo-religion caused him to strike out against his anointed brothers and their false prophecies. His being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer could well have contributed to his alienating himself from his associates of many years. He died without seeing a single prophecy come to pass.

    CoCo,

I read on Ray Franz's web site about the tape of this talk. Very interesting.

I've read some statements on this board to the effect that Jehovah's Witnesses did not have a "Governing Body" until after the elder arrangement came into effect. However, what happened then was that the Governing Body was separated from the legal corporation. Before that time, the situation was as described in this 1950 Watchtower article - that is the members of the Watch Tower Society (the officers) were said to be the governing body -- of course we know the reality was that it was a "one man show" for the President of the Society, but this was the "official" line:

    1/1/50 Watchtower - pg. 10 paragraph 2

The Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society, the governing body of Jehovah’s witnesses,

I attended a special meeting at Pittsburgh PA which I think marked the centennial of the Watch Tower Society. That would have made it 1984, although my memory wants to fix it earlier in time. We had to bring ID to get in; "apostates" with signs lined the streets as we approached. It was a most unusual meeting, called suddenly (with respect to the R & F) and very controlled.

Fred Franz gave the main talk. In it, he was talking about the separation of the Governing Body from the legal corporation and he made a statement to the effect that "very shortly", all corporations would pass out of existence. At the time, I remember hoping that there were no representatives of the press at that meeting. I could just see the headline -- Religious Leader predicts the end of all corporations! I also remember wondering at the time whether Bro. Franz might be getting a little senile.

Interesting to find out that he did not believe there was a 1st century governing body...

Great work CoCo and also ironic as I was studying and reading last night in the book of Galatians which only reconfirms your research as noted below.

Galatians 1:15-19 15 But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him 16 to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being. 17 Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. Instead, I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascus. 18 Then three years later I went to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed with him for fifteen days. 19 The only other apostle I met at that time was James, the Lord’s brother.

Then later in the next chapter he states in Ch 2:1-4 Then fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem again, this time with Barnabas; and Titus came along, too. 2 I went there because God revealed to me that I should go. While I was there I met privately with those considered to be leaders of the church and shared with them the message I had been preaching to the Gentiles. I wanted to make sure that we were in agreement, for fear that all my efforts had been wasted and I was running the race for nothing. 3 And they supported me and did not even demand that my companion Titus be circumcised, though he was a Gentile. 4 Even that question came up only because of some so-called Christians there—false ones, really—who were secretly brought in. They sneaked in to spy on us and take away the freedom we have in Christ Jesus. They wanted to enslave us and force us to follow their Jewish regulations

As I was reading last night it appeared to me that Paul only met with the apostles in 17 years twice and he had no formal instruction from them and only after the issue of circumsion came up did he take what was agreed upon by the older men and apostles because of false brothers pushing the Law. Ironically as many times as I read that as a witness it never jumped out at me until last night in my reading. It became evident that there could not have been a so called Govering Body directing every action and so the thought of that happening today has to be a man made belief to control the masses and not a scriptural reading

Freddy was campaigning against the GB idea, for he knew it would dilute the presidential power he hoped to soon inherit.

As it turned out - at least so far - the GB seems to remain a largely 'puppet' admininstration under the ruling power. Ray's insight shows that the GB was largely polarized, and rarely dared to move in a direction contrary to the 'leader'. Ray dared, and look what happened to him.

    Greetings Nana, Avbire and Jeff,

Thank you for fleshing out my little commentary with information essential to a clearer understanding. Personal accounts, such as that of Nana, bring bookish events better into the realm of reality. And the separation between the corporate and the spiritual [is anything about the Society actually spiritual?] is an aspect that many of us were a bit confused over, not to mention a host of other issues. The real power lay within the presidency, as you noted, and neither of the men was about to let go without a fight. Of course, the underlying foundation for this issue was Paul's appointment and its lack of connection to a so-called GB. Reading the account in Galatians puts it into proper context, allowing us to see the SHAM[E] of it all. Isn't it interesting how we seem to be on the same "page" so frequently?

    Gratefully,

    CoCo

CoCo, I believe I have a cassette recording of that talk by Franz. I'm pretty sure you can purchase it--perhaps from the FreeMinds site.

The ironic thing is that Ray Franz formulated and supported the governing body idea that he later opposed when the very same body exercised its authority to exclude him. Fred Franz on the other hand, who opposed the idea of a governing body as he saw it as a threat, was stuck during his presidency with exercising authority within the confines of the structure his nephew devised but had departed.

SBF, so you are saying that when FRED Franz thought it was wrong he gave into it, but RAY Franz when he realized it was wrong, left it?
