Of course, this is unofficial as I am not associated with him in any way, except for knowing someone who was acquainted with him. I have not become an AOG member and attend no church in particular.

The Reverend/ Dr. Gene Scott died yesterday. He was taken by a stroke. He had been suffering from prostate cancer but had foregone surgery and radiation as a show of faith. Surprisingly, it seemed to be working. He was 75, so I guess he had cheated death once too often.
Scott had been the Pastor of the AOG, Assemblies Of God for over 30 years. He was based in the Los Angeles, California area. He led the AOG into the "communications age" by buying radio stations, TV stations, foreign broadcast Short-wave stations, Internet presentations and satellite links globally. He didn't just settle for leasing a "comm. line" for his message.
In doing this, he insured that his message COVERED THE ENTIRE GLOBE!!!
His message was characterized by "teaching" and simply that. He loathed judgmental types and would directly confront them as being un-Christian. He openly declared that he would not judge you and you would not judge him. He stated that God was the judge of all and that the individual answered to God and not some "holier than thou" self-appointed individual or even a tribunal. He stated that if you dared to judge him, that he was "sinner enough to do something about it"!!!!
After delivering his "messages", he would state that 'this was the teaching; take it and do what you will with it'!!!
In earlier days, he would smoke a cigar on the stage and call out any who objected as not having a biblical basis to stand upon. He would agree that it was likely bad for one's health. In recent years, he seemed to forgo smoking for health reasons.
He had his church collect the largest private collection of Bible/Bible related manuscripts in the world. His "Room of the Book" rivals the British Museum and others for content. That includes age of the manuscripts copies of early Bibles, but others likely beat him out for volume.
With these volumes, he delved into the scholarly approaches to knowledge of all bible related issues. His approach differed in that he chose to look into the older Syriac, Coptic, Arabic and Ethioptic manuscripts These had been condemned by the Catholic Church, because of early schisms and disagreements at the time of the canonization attempts in the early 3rd century A.D.
This is a sad commentary, because these manuscripts were as early as directly into the 1st century, while the "recognized" and "accepted" manuscripts endorsed by Rome were frequently of the 10th century and only seldom went as far back as the 5th century A.D.
Scott recommends the Septuagint as a most valuable reference: it WAS the Bible that Jesus and the Apostles used, before the New Testament/Greek Scriptures were fashioned. (I personally have and use a version reprinted by Samuel Bagster of England from the 1800's; it is bilingual, having the Greek and English side by side.)
While not being an "anti-Papist", per se, he notes that "they screwed up". (That is my interpretation, not a quote.)
He used the name Jehovah on a regular basis, "because it was there" and he was a testament to that fact.
Scott led his church in handling the changes wrought by California into taxing churches by forming Delores Press, a TAX-PAYING subsidiary publisher. Pay the tax & be done with it!!! was the approach he took. Delores Press books are perhaps considered expensive, but some of what they publish are reproductions of early writings and manuscripts. These books are invaluable for research and reference and are not available elsewhere. Much of this work is the result of Scott's development of an extensive library/museum of Bible writings.
Scott would readily refer to another publisher for a book that he considered meaningful to advancing understanding of the Scripture.
As any "study of the scriptures" is an ongoing task, I recommend that any of you should examine his works. There are hundreds of his sermons on the I-net and tapes and books are available. Scott frequently read from the likes of Martin Luther, John Calvin, the Christian apologists of history and other commentators. Many of these writers discussed or introduced controversial thoughts on the Bible role in all matters. There is nothing wrong with reviewing such views.
Right, wrong or indifferent, there was not another like him; individuals of his caliber seem to have ceased to exist. He equaled some organizations that we know and actually outdid them :)
He was truly a unique person, and a "Renaissance man" in his field. Sadly, I do not see a comparable successor on the horizon.

Is the TV preacher back in the 70's/80's who wore a cowboy hat and smoked a pipe? If it is, I used to stay up late just to watch this guy. He was great. very entertaining.

Cigars, too; other funny hats and a leather jacket were donned by him, on occasion.

Dragon lady is too busy with a new career: working on the Railroad
Scott was a lot more tolerant than any JW I ever encountered. Outspoken, but tolerant

I am sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Gene Scott. I loved his show. Once he read the entire book "The Amityville Horror" on TV. He would quote from the book of Enoch and speak about Atlantis.
His response on the air to folks who said he was living with his secretary was, "It's none of your business! That's between me, her and God."
He would look at the camera and yell, "get on the telephone and send money. I don't want your prayers. If you send me your money I know I have your prayers."
He would say that when he got to heaven people would say,"Gene Scott! You used to cuss and you're in Heaven? He said he would look them in the eye and say, "GOD DAMN RIGHT!"
I will miss him.
