JW's & The Clergy

After I left the Organization one of the things that surprised me most was the Clergy of Christendom's view of Jehovah's Witnesses. I thought we were the 'center' of their attention, and they not only hated us, but were afraid of all the things we published about them.

Nothing could have been farther from the truth! Most Ministers hardly knew anything about Witnesses. You couldn't hardly get one mad at one and some would not let you speak about them in their respective churches because some felt they were actually a good religion.

Quite a few viewed them as a novelty, certainly felt no threat because of their existence, and for the most part didn't have a clue what they believed. They also never wasted their time reading the Watchtower and Awake nor had an interest to do so. A lot of JW's don't read them either!

Of course back in the 30's and 40's if a JW pulled up a sound car in front of a church and blasted them during their services, I suppose a few of the clergy noticed that but today?

Have any of you had similiar experiences with the Clergy? Listen up you JW's out there, these people are not out to get you!

    G'day outa,

There's much I've learned about the clergy in recent years. Mrs Ozzie and I had always believed the Watchtower view of the clergy. We have made an effort to meet and discuss scripture and teachings with many, and from different denominations.

    Surprise, surprise!

    What did we find?

The ones we have spoken with are humble (very humble!) freely acknowledging their weaknesses, and have a wonderful knowledge of the Bible, and "know" God. Yep, a real turnaround took place in our viewpoint.

Just like you I have not found that the JWs figure very highly in their minds, if at all. Rarely mentioned in fact. I can echo your comment:Listen up you JW's out there, these people are not out to get you! However, they are ready to show anyone, including JWs, the way of the 'Truth'.

    Cheers,
    Ozzie

The JW's trash other religions but the others are tolerant of the JW's .....hardly the picture we were painted when in the Org.

Another "trash" job is on the back cover of the May 22 Awake!

Under the heading (in bold capitals) "WHO ARE TEACHING ALL NATIONS THE TRUTH?" is this statement:

"A bishop once claimed:"Ultimate truth is beyond the grasp of all of us." Is that view correct? Or is there a source of ultimate truth? Is it possible that the time will come when everyone will speak the truth?"

So one unnamed, unsourced quotation represents the whole 'class', eh?

    Cheers,
    Ozzie

    Good point -Outaservice,

Thousands of verbal and printed attacks have been made on the integrity of religious leaders. The fact is that religious leaders seldom say a word about Jehovah’s Witnesses, despite the way the Watchtower Society persecutes and reviles them. If occasionally the Witnesses are criticised, it is in response to their numerous damning attacks made in almost every publication they print. The clergy I have spoken with have great compassion for the Witnesses, feeling they have been misled.

The Society would like its members to believe that they are a persecuted minority who survive only with God's protection. They have gone out of their way to provoke the church leaders. Considering the hostile statements directed at them, the church leaders show considerable restraint. Far from the clergy persecuting the Witnesses - the reverse is true.

I was discussing with my 18 year old step son, this very issue yesterday. (when the JW step children reach 18 I pull out all the stops and when we discuss religion, which is often, I challenge them directly.) At any rate, he seems to agree that now even the JW's have a clergy class (I hate the term "class" YUCK! sounds like a marxist term not a religious one). He also agrees that the JW's are just as bad as the rest of "Christendom" on these type issues. Hope for the boy yet, he beleives in voting, is beginning to question the 1914 date, etc.

Outaservice, I totally agree with you (and the others that have posted on this thread)

After 30 yrs of indoctrination that the clergy hate JWs (as the Revelation book told us in graphic detail) it was eye-opening to realise that this was NOT the case afterall.

Typical case of pot calling the kettle black! [!:(]

Hi Outofservice: Back in the 1930s and 1940s and some into the 1950s may have produced some more open resistence by some clergymen. JIm Penton, for example, has strong memories of the persecution that JWs sufferred in Canada, particularly in Quebec. And some few clergymen, especially some few Catholic Priests may have helped fuel to government. I will ask him to give some historical information on this.

When I a kid in the 1950s and 1960s, JWs were just a goofy religion that went door-to-door. On rare ocassions our Catholic Priest in giving a sermon, would mention the dedication of JWs to help inspire the church body of adults to spread the Gospel, minister to one another, etc. But, other than that, little was ever said about JWs.

My mother once allowed a JW to talk extensivelky to her, bringing in his books, etc. I am sure the JW felt he had a Bible Study going. But my mother was highly educated, and fought him tooth and nail. [That reminds me of a new post I want to make regarding abortion that will supprise many on this forum.]

When I started studying with the JWs in the late 1960s, I went to my Catholic Priest. He was not really concerned with JWs, and had a few good things to say. But he was more concerned with religion in general and was considering leaving the Priesthood. So, he was not much help. The head prist - Catholics call the Monsenior - was not too thrilled. He resented the things said in the Watchtower magazine, and would chide the JWs a little bit when they came around.

I recall one time when he yelled out of his window at the JWs passing by, 'We burn old ladies and babies here and sacrifice them to Satan! But the JWs did not see the parody, sarcasm, or humor in what the Minsenior said.

Finally after I left the organization, I did attend a Baptist Church for a while. I too expected that they would be all-concerned and shower me with attention, and that what JWs did was all-important to them. As you experienced, they did not really seem too concerned. Some would come up and ask me how to talk to JWs at the door, or how to help a relative who is studying to see the flaws in the religion. Eventually, I was asked to givce a couple of Sunday School session to adults on how to talk to JWs, but this was more at my request so I could try and deal with a lot of questions all at once.

When the JWs would go to the door, some of the chruch memebrs would tell the JWs that one of the JWs was now attending church, but they would not say who it was (me) because they said that I was in their 'Witness Protection Program" with humor of course. This pissed off the JWs, because they wanted to find out who was attending a chruch of Christendom.

In general, we JWs thought we were the center of the universe, then upon leaving the Big-O, we discovered that we were a tiny moon orbiting some outer minor planet. Kind of like the way sciences determined that earth was not the center of the universe.

Amazing, that is so true about the JWs thinking they're the center of the universe! One surprise I had when leaving is when I went to a Christian book store and tried to find refutations about JWs. NOT ONE! It's as if they never heard of JWs.

yah, i thought the same thing too. that all those evil religions hated jw's out there.HA....when i started going to church and told people i was raised a jw, i got very little response aside from " oh really?"
i have to laugh, i thought i would at least get more sympathy from them. but most do not even know what they teach or believe. so when i told them about the stuff like no birthdays, xmas, etc....that suprised some.
i think the so called" persecution" is like media hype. antagonise who you have to , get them pissed off at jw's, throw the jw's in jail or whatever..."see...we are hated because we are jehovah's chosen ppl"..........
has any one read "30 years a wt slave"? he makes mention of this type of hype
