Jehovah's Witnesses, meet your mother

If you had to describe the faithful slave, information disseminating arm of the organization as having a singular, human personality, what would that personality be like? Would it not be that of a nagging mother? How many "warnings" about apostates, the internet, Satan, worldlies, workmates, people met while on vacation, Satan, working too much, not putting forth enough effort, the media, slowing down, Satan, entertainment, Satan Satan Satan, etc. have you heard in the past year? Does it ever stop, this endless badgering? Do you appreciate having a "mother" like this? A mother who constantly barrages you with pictures and words that describe or depict what she thinks you (her wanting-to-be-obedient-but-in-need-of-constant-guidance-and-correction child) should be doing? Not a day goes by when mother isn't promoting the family creed to you in one way or another.

Do you appreciate a mother who, although having no fleshly children of her own, never hesitates to dispense advice to you about how to properly raise your family? Are you measuring up to mother's expectations in this regard? How does it feel to fall so woefully short of Mother's lofty yet perfectly attainable ideals? Does it feel like shame? Do the pictures of happy happy JW family life and happy happy JW congregation life as depicted in the magazines reflect what you see in your local congregation?? Or does it sometimes seem like these pictures are so much propaganda?? Do you sometimes giggle at them??

Do you appreciate a mother who feels it necessary to counsel you about how she expects you to behave, not once, but several times in the months leading up to the glorious convention that all of Jehovah's happy happy people are going to be attending?? Are your fellow JW's as happy as Mother thinks they are? And are people outside the organization as wicked and miserable as Mother would have you believe? Does mother seem to have a bit of a loose grip on reality???? Does mother's us-vs.-them mantra become tiring sometimes?

Do you sometimes cringe at the way mother repeats the same ideas to you literally hundreds of times?? Does it seem difficult to think independently in this environment? Does mother treat you like an adult? Do you sometimes read mother's advice on a matter, and disagree with her counsel? How do you feel when that happens? Does it feel like shame? Mother doesn't take criticism or disagreement very well, does she? Do you feel sometimes you'd like to stand up to...no, just keep choking it down. After all she does know best, as she's told you time and time and again. This world is so dangerous! Mother is your protection! Remember, she is led by God's spirit. You remember that don't you? You know, the faithful slave! Matt 24:45-47! Mother has been given her authority from God! You need to always rember this! Mother knows how important it is for you to remember what the source of her authority is, so don't worry - her reminders will never cease.

When you follow mother's advice to a T and do everything she asks you to do and be everything she asks you to be, how wonderful yet fleeting that feeling is! Because two nights from now, next week, next month, next year, mother will be asking you to examine yourself, question yourself. Again and again. Do you measure up? Mother doesn't approve of everything you're doing. And she knows what you're doing. Mother loves you and knows what is best for you! Remember that!

If I didn't know better I'd say you have mother issues.....LOL

That's what they claim to be....our mother!

A mother that eats its young!

shotgun, the irony of it is that my joining JW's was in large part a rebellion against my controlling, infantilizing Catholic mother.

Oh I am so grateful she abandoned me THAT Mother....

I abandoned her Mouthy. The adjustment has been difficult, but worth it. Yesterday I went to have my car looked at and there were some WT's & Awake!'s in the lobby of the repair place. I confiscated them on my way out. I flipped through a couple of them before throwing them away, same old message from mother - the world is coming to an end, JW's are so happy, Satan is after us, *barf*

    good post, DTM

what the "fife" is this about???? can't-get-in-the-JWD-popular-posters-club class !!!! you know there is no such a thing. We are survivors and that makes us popular, if nothing else, we have learned to appreciate ourselves. So, cut the "I feel sorry for myself" stuff and love yourself.

    Hugs,

    Thanks joy & mouthy

I'll let you in on a secret - thanks to a fellow poster who will remain unnamed, I smoked weed for the first time in many many years last night (since my pre-JW days) and I typed a whole bunch of stuff out including this thread topic. I found myself putting words to the flotsam and jetsam of my mind with such ease, whereas usually I struggle to find the right words. It was an interesting experience, to say the least!

I thought that this thread would get more response than it did as I thought it captured the drudgery of JW existence well - maybe I oversold the "mother" metaphor, or maybe I am just too clueless to understand what does and doesn't resonate on this board.

Dan!!! I think you didnt need the weed to express yourself. Many in our group( support group) was into that after they left the borg- But when they tell how it altered their minds- made them not care- too laid back etc:etc:they wished they had laid off it. Just passing on what they said....Its a free country- if it turns you on- so be it! but I think getting too laid back> too relaxed can get us in trouble also. Just Granny advice.((((hug)))
