"Higher" Education not Needed in God's New Order
In the June 8, 1967 issue, the Awake! magazine printed an article on pages 3-8 entitled "Second Thoughts About a College Education." This article painted a sorry picture of inadequate teachers and courses, financially strapped colleges, violent and immoral climates in schools, heavy drug use, and atheistic attitudes prevailing in colleges. It went on to say that job opportunities for college educated people were very poor, with work not requiring higher education often paying more. This article was written during the push for 1975, and along with many other articles written between 1966 and 1975 highlighted the idea that the end was so near that education would be a foolish waste of time. Education would not be needed in the new world. With the end so near, trades would be more useful in the new order than education. Here is a quote from that article:
Parents who are Jehovah's witnesses have another very sound reason for channeling their children's lives into useful trades. They know from fulfilled Bible prophecy that today's industrial society is near its end. Soon it will be given its death stroke by Almighty God himself. After that, in God's new order a reconstruction work will be done to transform this entire earth into a paradise. Trades of many types will be very useful then, as will skills in agriculture and homemaking . So by guiding their children away from the so-called 'higher' education of today, these parents spare their children exposure to an increasingly demoralizing atmosphere, and at the same time prepare them for life in a new system as well.

Higher Education part of "Devil's Propaganda"
The following quotation from a 1969 Watchtower article hints at how strongly the Society opposed higher learning. Making something of yourself is here classed as "Devil's propaganda." Notice the continuing theme that time is too short to waste it on education. They, claim that the only work with a future is Watchtower service:
Many schools now have student counselors who encourage one to pursue higher education after high school, to pursue a career with a future in this system of things. Do not be influenced by them. Do not let them "brainwash" you with the Devil's propaganda to get ahead, to make something of yourself in this world. The world has very little time left! Any "future" this world offers is no future! ... Make pioneer service, the full-time ministry, with the possibility of Bethel or missionary service your goal. This is a life that offers an everlasting future!
The Watchtower, March 15, 1969, Article on pages 168- 173 titled "What Influences Decisions in Your Life?". Quote is from p. 171
I personally verify that these sayings above were quoted by the Watchtower..

These are very fundamentalist quotations and show similarity to fundamentalist Moslem teachings.
The Taliban for instance forbids all women to have any education in order to be a good Moslem.
The Watchtower cant go that far in a well educated Western world. But they go as far as they can.

Fundamentalist Moslems teach: We have the Truth, the only Truth.
The Watchtower teaches: We have the Truth, the only Truth.
My opinion is that fundamentalist religions whether Moslem or Christian or otherwise are a danger to any people whose goal it is to develop himself into a better person and contribute to a better and highly developed society.
I urge all free thinking men and women to examine the doctrines which are taught by certain Societies as the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of Pennsylvania and ask questions like: How much harm is being done to family life? , because evidence shows that their doctrines have shattered thousands of families all over the world. Evidence also shows that elders have harbored pedophiles and elders who themselves are pedophiles. In this way many have become silent lambs for many years.
The Watchtower teachings as a whole should be examined by the people. A fundamentalist religion is a danger to mankind and should be dealt with.

Most of my children fell victim to that propoganda and were actively discouraged from going to college. I was able to prevail with my oldest daughter and she attended the university that her mother and I both graduated from. She wound up being disfellowhipped for not putting "her service to Jehovah" ahead of her school work. She also started dating and later married a boy who was of another religious faith. None of her brothers and sisters attended her wedding. Her mother also refused to attend. That was, of course, extremely painful to my daughter and she still hasn't gotten over it. Her mother and her brothers and sisters actively shunned her. Well, the system didn't end in 1975 and her brothers and sisters wound up in menial jobs working for people who were not as bright as they were, but who had a college diploma. They finally realized their mistake and her two sisters began getting a college education. Of course by then they had families and jobs and could only go part time. One is now a Registered Nurse and the other, who is a senior in college, is an executive with a national company. I am glad to say that all are out of the cult now except for one son who is married to a JW. He suffers greatly by not being able to associate with his brothers and sisters. There is now a whole generation of JWs and former JWs who are earning far less than their potential so that the WTBTS could get free labor to propogate their organization. The price is much higher, however, because they were not allowed to develope their intellect and expand their consciousness. It is much easier for the WTBTS to exert mind contol over people who are under-educated, and that, of course, was the real reason for the policy in the first place.

My parents thought the end was so near that they held me back from even starting kindergarten for a year. They said the end was going to be here any minute, so why put her in school? I graduated 10 years ago.

it was articles such as this one, along with talks, dramas, co, do visits, demo on the meetings, interviews at the conventions of those who chose the better portion, etc.

we often have jw who were not around during that time who try to paint the picture that IT WAS JUST A PERSONAL CHOICE sorta like do you want Butter Pecan or Peach Ice Cream-
when the fact of the matter was that to select college MEANT YOU DIDN'T HAVE A TRUE APPRECIATION OF SPIRITUAL THINGS
while most religions view going to college as a personal matter -jw connect going to college with ones relationship with god himself-
and when you put this type of choice before for a person while claiming to speak directly for god himself , why would a person if he believed in his religion want to chose a course that clearly would say YOU DON'T LOVE GOD OR TRUST GOD
this is why so many of us just laugh at some NEWBIE JW TRYING TO DEFEND THE UNDEFENDAGBLE
because instead of listening and reading and taking in the context of the times and how in general jw view info from the publications, they try their best to make excuses
how sad- so lurkers each day you lurk and stay inside of wt by attending meetings all i can say is when you finally realize what we have you are going to be PISSED-
as i tell my wife it is only after a jw becomes MAD AS HELL can it be said that they are getting out of wt-
as long as they come up with some funky excuse to attend meetings where some "CheeseCracker" dude is spitting on them and they are just wiping it off they still have not made it to the level that we are here

i think the reasons y wT advised its not a good idea to be going off to colleges was cuz of the influence it will have on jw kids who just grad from hishskool.. especially if u go away from home n live at a dorm.. jW kids already grew up in a tight control enviroment as it is.. and if ur not strong spritually and do not have that self displine.. when they go off to a college and have no one watching over them w. all the freedom.. they will go all out.. start partyin hard.. harder than most people.. get drunk off their butts.. get into drugs.. get into boys/girls.. cuz they feel like they missed out out alot of things when they were growin up.. and tries to make up for it.. and slowly losing their concience of the bible teachings and move further away from jehovah.. 95% of the peeps in college parties.. who doesnt?? 5% who doesnt are straight up geeks w/ no friends.. its all about the bad associations man.. just like that scripture says..almost all these baptized foolz i kno stopped comin out 2 meetins after they went off to college n came back.. their parents cant do anythin about it cuz theyre all old enuff now.. too bad for them.. higher enducation is good.. but not for a price of an everlasting life.. jW kids should be goin 2 local universities or tech school or somethin.. cuz everythings just passin by.. u can still make a good living.. shoot actually u can't even get a decent job w/ a degree nowadayz anyways.. WTs been sayin end is near n end is near.. hellz yea end is near.. if the "end" was a calendar.. we're in november or december or somethin..

WT RESPONSE:
Why would info from 30 years be relivent. The light has become brighter and now we see that it is ok if SOME people go to school, the WT needs lawyers too. Oh, btw we won't apologize for discouraging all those people who followed our advice, even though we were mistaken. We are imperfect humans, don't you know. It was their mistake that they followed the wrong advice. But do not worry. Even though you wasted this life away, it was for serving Jehoober and whatever you give up for him, he will pay back 1000 fold. Isn't that great?!? You give up your education and you will get 1000 educations. You give up you family and you get 1000 other familys who will love you WAY more than your real one does because they are your "Spiritual Family" (tm) They love you for what you believe, not for who you are, which is a greater love that Jehoober teaches.
