NEWS: I am publicly reproved over UN situation.

My wife and I met with 3 elders for a "judicial hearing".
Our crime: Simply put, was talking. I showed a friend the UN website where the WTS was listed as an NGO which then led to a 2 hour discussion of various doubts that we BOTH have had. My wife also showed a friend the UN thing but also discussed with her a first hand account of a pedophile cover-up that we knew about in our former congregation. My wife did this even though I warned her of the possible consequences of talking with others about "doubts". Now I'm so glad she did. Her friend was so disturbed by what my wife told her that she went to the PO of our congregation. After 2 meetings with the Elders my wife and I are both to be publicly reproved this Thursday. The good that has come of all this is that my wife who was still wavering between "this is the truth/this isn't the truth" was completely shocked by this quick and harsh decision. Her 16 years of faithful "service" are about to be null and void for merely having a private conversation with a friend about some FACTUAL and PUBLIC information. We were told that it was wrong to be looking at the UN's website, and we had the scripture applied to us about "those that arise and speak twisted things". When the Elders gave us their decision (which was presented as good news - "we've decided to extend mercy and to not disfellowship you"), they told us that although this may seem to us to be a very quick decision it was somethng that they had to "cut out of the congregation like a gangrene or cancer that can spread quickly". My wife is obviously sad by all of this. At the same time though this has served to really open her eyes to the cold machinery that is the WTS. She keeps saying "what a joke" the whole thing is. Anyway, just wanted to inform you all that this UN business is being taken VERY seriously at the local level.

I'm sure that you and your wife have jitters right now as you contemplate what to do but you'll be surprised how insignificant the elders, jc hearings and the whole Society thing will be a year after you leave. Hope you continue on your journey to true freedom.

    Willie,

I am so sorry to hear about the JC. I know how scary that must have been. I am also sorry to hear about how it's shocked your wife's mind. I was in the same boat 11 years ago. Shocked by the JC's decision to disfellowship me when I had CONFESSED a sin to them, that they wouldn't have know otherwise. It was a shock to my heart - and the hurt was so terrible. I truly do hope that within the midst of this situation that you and your wife can see good in this world. That The Tower's control is exactly THAT - CONTROL. And it's not for your good and that they aren't looking for your best interests. I will keep you and Mrs. Willie in my prayers! There are many here that can relate and give you comfort. I suggest (if you deem it appropriate) that you have your wife come here to educate herself even more.

    With love,
    Andi

hmmmmm.....so they feel they have to "cut out of the congregation like a gangrene or cancer that can spread quickly".
    Very interesting wording. Very.......
    How Hitleresque. How Torquemada-esque.
And looking at a UN website--viewing public information is now cosorting with those who "speak twisted things".
If they're smart, they'll lighten up, NOT seek to censure, and come clean.
    ......if they're smart.....

My thoughts are with you on your journey, my friend,
    B.

Remarkable, reproved for going to the UN website. Reproved for telling facts that can be verified (something I'm sure the elders did not do). Told it is better to turn a blind eye to the truth. Remarkable.

    Tanalyst,
The idea that is hardest to convey here is that we have no bad feelings towards these men even though we were treated unjustly.
These are/were our friends. The way they treated us, although very irrational, is understandable from the JW's perspective. I have to really apply Jesus' words here "forgive them, for they know not what they are doing". I do not plan on attending any more meetings after our reproof is announced on Thursday (I want to be there to just to hear it and let it sink in). This leaves me with mixed emotions at this stage because I really do love the people on a personal level.

Is there any option to appeal a decision to publicly reprove? I can't think of any justifiable reason (even following JW logic) why looking at the UN website could possibly be wrong.

This sounds like a case that is being seriously mishandled. To avoid making waves, it might be best for you to let it go; however it does not appear that these brothers are following procedure.

It sounds as though they are leaning on their own understanding of what constitutes apostasy or independent thinking and acting hastily, and not at all with a view to 'building up.'

As far as I am aware, simply having a doubt or asking a sincere question about an issue that one is troubled by is not wrong. If you'd like, I can try to search for references in the WT and other literature from the Society that support this.

I am sorry that you and your wife are being stressed with this ludicrious decision. It is in fact something that myself and another very close friend are struggling with. How hypocritical that articles printed in the WT often critize other Christian religions for the way the leaders of those religions treat members when members have doctrinal or other questions. In reality, the WTS is actually worse: Instead of simply ignoring the questions those who ask them are punished.
