Spousal abuse is a serious thing and I wonder what your thoughts were in posting this? If you wanted to help, how would posting this help them?
I would have called the cops, period! Let the cops and them sort things out. That woman or man needed help at that time. Next time (great chances it will happen again) call the cops and do them a favor.
