One Devastating Bible Passage

I used the following quote from Mark 9:38-40 in another thread, but thought it might be worthy to have people comment about it in its own thread:

"John said to him: "Teacher, we saw a certain man expeling demons by the use of your name and we tried to prevent him, because he was not accompanying us. But Jesus said: "Do not try to prevent him, for there is no one that will do a powerful work on the basis of my name that will quickly be able to revile me, for he that is not against us is for us."

Think about it. Here was a man who was NOT part of Jesus' flock, yet he was using the name of Jesus to expel DEMONS! According to virtually everything Watchtower that man was definitely and unquestionable demonized himself. Yet, how did Jesus say he should be dealt with? He was to be left alone. Not shunned, not reviled or vilified. Simply left alone. He would only have been considered an enemy of Jesus if he worked AGAINST Jesus.

How then in the light of that clear simple admonition can the WTS scripturally their institutionally ENFORCE shunning for those members who just want to quietly fade away; those people who are not interested in fighting against the WTS, but just cannot tolerate WTS abuse and humiliation any longer? They just want to leave the cult and be left alone.

How does the WTS argue their policy in light of the above cited words from Jesus himself?

the society's view is more like "he that is not for us is against us"
for us = active member going to meetings and field service

They have a lot reasoning like this, too many things are either one extreme or the other, there is no in-between.

Farkel, that is fine as far as it goes. But then you have to be prepared to explain why Jesus said this:

He that is not on my side is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters.--Matthew 12:30

Jesus also said: " Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters" - Matthew 12:30

Hmmmm, it's almost as if the bible contradicts itself

It's called a blatant contradiction in the bible.

I don't know how anyone would resolve those two passages.

I disagree that the two passages contradict one another. Jesus said who is not against them ( speaking or acting against them ) is with them. He also said he who is not with me ( clearly the man was with him since he was using Jesus' name, and thereby showing he gathered with Jesus, even if he didn't physically travel with them ).

    Just my two pennies.

In the book of Farkel chapter 2 verse 7, it's written "burn this book"

The WTS has a brilliant solution to that dilemma: they never quote Mark 9:40 in their litter-a-chure!

The lesson for the Society is clear: Persons from outside the "organization" are just as acceptable as persons inside.

Very true! A few months ago I used the 2003 CD to search for any mention of Mark 9:40 and all I got were the little (scripture) references at the end of sentences that had nothing to do with the meaning of Mark 9:40. Basically they throw that in at the end a sentence as "Scripture Filler" to make it look like the statement is based on the bible, but if you look up the passage it has nothing to do with what was stated. -- Luke 6:4
