Why do they insist this number must be literal?
Because they want so badly for it to be literal.
    What does all this signify?
Absolutely nothing. But the hills are filled with the sound of it.

um, i'm new... and young... so this may be a no-brainer question, but

where do you get the 6 from?

Oh. Damn. It was meant as sarcasm. I thought it would be pretty well self-explanatory to JWs and ex-JWs. No wonder it wasn't getting responses.

It is JW styles mathematics applied to 144,000. It catalogues the ways to arrive at 144,000 by using only the "significant" numbers from the Revelation Climax book but starts from a base of gross (monstrous) imperfection, which they claim is represented by the number "6". Their numerology is stupid and this chart pokes fun at it.

All of the calculations equal 144,000. The numbers have absolutely no significance beyond a scant mathematical relationship to the number 144,000.

Sort of like the "math" they use to arrive at 7 x (360 prophetic years of 365.25 days per year) = 2520 years, which subtracted from 1914 equals 606 +1 (for the non-existent zero year) = 607 BC—the exact year nothing terribly remarkable happened in Acient Near East history.

    Hopefully that will help.

    Respectfully,

I think "theillogical" sums it up pretty well. In fact, it sums up all the WTS teachings.

Generally 6 comes from being "one short of 7", 7 implying earthly perfection. "Falling short of the mark" makes one imperfect. These two numbers are very old JW lore. I remember them from the "Armageddon book" of the 50's; of course the "Babylon book" and the original "Daniel book" had them, also.

Excellent numerology. You should be a Kabballah spouting rabbi!!!

Very Theo-krap-tik; you can skip todays meeting

Now for another piece of JW lore/numerology:

The Number of the Wild Beast (Name is covered elsewhere, I notice) is 6-6-6:

That's 6 for Imperfection, 3 times for Completeness or Emphasis. So, this is a "man's number": Imperfect and Completely so.

3 was also sometimes considered "Complete". There was the instance of a king that struck once with an object (arrow, sword, I don’t remember) and his enemies were routed but not annihilated; I believe he was he was told that he did not have enough zeal or enthusiasm and that if he had struck three times, the enemies would have been lovingly annihilated.
