Living Through the Brief Liberalization of Jehovah's Witnesses, Never Recovering
by TMS inwith the book crisis of conscience detailing the turbulence at bethel during the early to mid 70's, the transformation from autocratic rule to governance by committee or a body of men, many of us can speak to how that felt among the rank and file of the local congregations during those years.
we learned new concepts based in large part to research done for the aid to bible understanding volume, then we were asked or coerced into unlearning those principles, going back to the old ways.
some of us never readjusted, finding ourselves very different from our more hardline compadres.. the inertia for the changes that eventually were initiated in the congregations came from the discovery that the greek words episkopos and presbyteros were used biblically to refer to all qualified men in a congregation, not just one.

Why does the Society allow women to speak in the congregations?
by Badfish ini know this sounds sexist, but you know what?
the bible is sexist.. in order to establish that birthdays cannot be celebrated, the society references two obscure passages that mentions someone getting killed at a birthday celebration.
however, nowhere in the scriptures does it say that birthdays are wrong.. but then, when the bible is very clear about something such as this:.

Epimenides paradox: "Epimenides The Cretan Says, "All Cretans are Liars"
by frankiespeakin inthomas fowler (1869) states the paradox as follows: "epimenides the cretan says, 'that all the cretans are liars,' but epimenides is himself a cretan; therefore he is himself a liar.
but if he be a liar, what he says is untrue, and consequently the cretans are veracious; but epimenides is a cretan, and therefore what he says is true; saying the cretans are liars, epimenides is himself a liar, and what he says is untrue.
thus we may go on alternately proving that epimenides and the cretans are truthful and untruthful."[1].

12 is the article " what kind of spirit do you show ?
" right away this article starts drawing the line of demarcation in the sand between who has the right to make decisions within jehovah's witnesses and who does not have the right to do so.

Jesus' parousia started in 1975, Governing Body selected as Faithful and Discreet Slave and Evil Slave dealt with by 1980, and Armageddon arrives in 2015?
by JWB injesus' parousia started in 1975, governing body selected as faithful and discreet slave and evil slave dealt with by 1980, armageddon arrives in 2015?.
it seems to me that some new light needs to be generated if the governing body (gb) of jws is to be considered as the faithful and discreet slave (fds).. .
(a) gb needs to be around as an entity when selected by jesus during his parousia.

Crosses, Beards and Wings
by Cold Steel ini've always been fascinated by the pictures in the watchtower.
back in the 70s, i was intrigued by pictures of a beardless jesus hanging on a stake with two theives hanging beside him.
he usually had a full head of hair, but it looked strange for a beardless jesus to be standing in the midst of his disciples, all with beards!

Self Defense And Eschewing Violence: Mutually Exclusive?
by Cold Steel init seems that the views on handgun ownership and weapons are sporatic among jws.
if i understand it correctly, it's generally okay to own guns and knives as long as they aren't to be acquired as weapons...even self defense.
some jws say they have no problems with gun/knife ownership; others say that it's easier not to tell anyone they have them.
