I'm relatively 'new' to the concept of thinking for myself....Coming to the conclusion that what I thought was 'the truth' simply isn't brought on many questions for me.... I find it hard to let go of the idea that there is a God, but at the same time I question his existence.
Just a thought that I had today which I would like to share:
Taking into account the universe and the perfect harmony that exists within it... think about the human body... some of the perfect harmony that we see in the universe we can see in the functions of our bodies. i.e. process of breathing, digesting food...etc then i thought...what if this is perfection? Maybe we are perfect?
Sure we may say something stupid from time to time, get sick, make mistakes...etc. But our view of perfection is based on what we were taught to think is perfect...and what is considered perfect today may change tomorrow.
As a JW I had a hard time understanding perfection. If Eve was perfect why would she eat the forbidden fruit? would she not know any better? I mean, really? Why would you eat the fruit?
Then listening to the sisters rant on about how they will lose weight and steal all the hot brothers the new world made me question it even more....does perfection equal being hot? does perfection mean being size 0? If you think so then does that not mean that in the new world all will look the same, talk the same etc...?
Does this make any sense to you???

Shoot from the hip witnessing and the calm before the storm?
by donny inone of my co-workers here (a non-baptized, non-attending meeting son of a jw) told me yesterday that his jw cousin told him that the end is right at the doorstep because of the calm and complacency seen not only in the "world" but also in the congregation.
he told him that this "lack of zeal" was not due to a lack of love for jehovah, but was gods way of fulfilling prophecy.
the jw cousin then went on to cite the example of the folks of noah's time when everyone was partying and having a good time and suddenly the flood came and that was all she wrote.

Hmmm....been to every meeting for the past 7 years and never heard of it. Sounds like a self-righteous 'prophet' is making things up to convince others that the end is near.

Best answer to "What prevents you from getting baptized?"
by venusinfauxfurs inthe nosy elder at the congregation i attend until i can get out very soon (just quickly: born in, was headed towards unbaptized pub but changed my mind about that and baptism) pulled me aside and showed me the scripture about coming across the body of water and asking "what prevents me from getting baptized" and i really want a quick, preferably smart-ass reply the next time he puts me on the spot like that.. .
.

Hi!
Welcome to the forum! I'm new here myself ;)
First thing that comes to mind is (if you are under 18) :
'I appreciate how our publications bring out that baptism is the most important step in ones life. I am not old enough to get married and I feel that I am not mature enough to get baptized. I really strive to follow Jesus example as he waited until he was past the bloom of youth to get baptized.' -

Today's Watchtower Lesson Really Bothered Me...
by dontplaceliterature ini was a hair away from telling my wife i never wanted to go to the kingdom hall again after today's watchtower.
the conductor mentioned something along the lines of..."if you think having to shun your disfellowshipped children is bad...you should read up on the israelites.
when one of their children was disobedient to the law, they had to take the before the judges so that they could be stoned to death...and guess who's job it was throw the first stone?".

I was planning to comment on p.14 and say something along the lines of 'the parents must decide whether they will obey the organization or if they will allow their natural feelings for their children get in the way'...but I couldn't do it. I haven't commented since I woke up and this article had my blood boiling. I could not take it and sat with my baby in the mothers room till it was over.
On the way home DH asked me how I felt about the article..I too wanted to tell my husband that I no longer want to go to the KH...but instead I bit my tongue and said 'it was ok'. -

What Was The BEST Thing About Being A Jehovah's Witness?

There are a few good things, other than living in an illusion.
As witnesses we developed superior sales skills.
And for some, it helped overcome drinking, drug addiction, and clean up their life in general.

Pre-written prayer at assembly?
by angel.face ini was at the assembly a little while ago.
my baby was acting up during the closing prayer and for the first time i looked up on stage.. it really looked like the brother was reading the prayer.
he had his head turned to one side of the podium where his notes lay.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it.
It's just that I went to a non-JW wedding reception where someone said grace before dinner and she read the prayer(it wasn't our father but something she wrote on her own). Now the JWs at the wedding were criticizing this woman for reading it. So I assumed that brothers don't do that.

Are we all still FAMILY? Yes or No?
by Greybeard inhere is why, even though i no longer agree with most of what the gb/wt/jw's teach, i still feel especially close to all of us who were apart of this group.
born in or converted.
we all have had the same life experience of being raised in a over bearing mind controlling cult.

YES!
What a nice post.
I am new here but I feel like I'm among family. I'm still 'in' but for the purpose get my family out.
I can't talk to my family about everything that I've learned about JWs or feel about them, so, in that sense you guys know me better then my family does.
I think the other uniting factor here for ex-JWs or people like me is that others who are not familiar with JWs just don't understand. We have all been there and know the feelings and notions one may go through, so we can support each other.
I have mentioned before that this is THE life saving work (getting people out of mind enslavement) and someone replied that this is the worldwide brotherhood and I believe that to be true.
