ok, door to door question.......
by freedom96 ini am always teasing my wife about having a "country club" upbringing as a witness.. in the hall i grew up in, and those i attended for a few years after turning 18, were pretty hard core.
i tease her about how easy she had it.
which, in my mind was clearly the case, but that is another story.. this case involves going out in service.. in my halls, you went out almost regardless of weather.

JW Convention First Aid
by Quotes ini just had a flashback that reminded me of one of the only times i saw my elder-father somewhat "fed up" with his fellow brethren.
once upon a time, my father had some sort of first-aid badge from his workplace.
he was assigned the task of managing the first ais station at the circuit assembly.

My grandma was/is a real piece of work. She only ever visited once a year, (from 3 hours away) and it was always when the District Convention was. That usually coincided with my birthday, and she would give me money as a present. I would ask my mom why grandma gave me something for my birthday, but she would downplay it: "Since she doesn't see you that often." LOL That didn't explain the birthday cards she gave! We always referred to her as a "hypocrite"
I always liked that I got to see my Grandpap, but since he wasn't a JW, I didn't get to spend much time with him though because my days were stuck in the assembly. :(
I believe my mom would have really taken me home if not for grandma. She could have went to the same program the following week at the same place. I just kept feeling worse that day. I had gotten ill at the meetings several times over the years, and she always left right away with me. -

My Book of Bible Stories
by Taylor S. ini just got my hands on a copy of my book of bible stories ... (1978).
at first i was excited when a friend pulled it out of his bag, said he'd gotten it as a kid.
then i started flipping through, looking at the pictures, feeling the memories spin in my brain.

My mom gave my son a copy of this book a few years back. It had been a long time since I had looked at it. He was really upset with the picture of the beaten up Jew who is helped by the Samaratan. He called him the "scary blood guy." I looked through it and couldn't believe some of the pictures. I guess since I was raised with it, I never looked at it objectively before.
A few weeks ago, my mom sent us the Learn from the Great Teacher book. She even wrote in the accompanying note that the picture of that Jew was not so bloody as in The Book of Bible Stories book. Ugh, I threw it in the closet. -

I got sick at the District Convention when I was 7. It was actually my birthday too. I kept throwing up, and my mom took me to first aid. I had a fever, and I could barely stand up. They couldn't do much for me, but they actually told my mom to take me home! She wasn't up for the idea, but she decided to run it past my grandma (who had rode with us). She wouldn't leave, so my mom spent the whole day running me to the restroom. At least I got to stay home the next day.

Wife joining, but I don't want the kids to get all brainwashed
by Check_Your_Premises inmy wife is joining.
she feels that the choice is between nothing and god, and that the only way to have a relationship with god is through these people.
i have accepted that.

How old are your children?
I think your guidelines are a good start. You might want to agree to let the kids decide about celebrating holidays, or insist they will be celebrated no matter what.
Please never get soft on your stance. My dad is a Non-JW, and at first he was very opposed to us going to the meetings. Over the years, he became just annoyed and finally passive. It became to where he would even tell me to go to the meetings to keep my mom quiet, and I no longer could confide in him about my feelings toward what I was being taught. -

How Far Would You Have Gone To Prove Your Loyalty To The Organization?
by minimus inwould you have not taken a transfusion?
would you make sure that your child was deprived of one, too?
would you have turned in your own family member to the elders?..........just how far would you have gone in showing allegiance to the cult?

I used to worry about needing a blood transfusion too. Those stories of brave JW kids dying because they didn't take blood, but reminders that they would be in paradise, used to scare me. I didn't want to die.
I remember my JW mom wanting to fill out a blood card for me. My non-JW dad put an end to that. Then, I knew he would have stood up for me to save my life, so it didn't bother me anymore.
I know what I did endure at school for being a JW. No friends, no parties and going to the library during holiday parties. A few of my teachers used to give me extra assignments to do during them. When I was in Kindergarten, a boy pushed me down at recess and called me a stupid Jehovah's Witness and made fun of me because I hadn't gotten any Christmas presents. Other kids gathered around me, and this boy put his foot on my stomach, and I couldn't get up. I was a tiny little thing. Then, he spit on my face! I remember telling my mom that I wasn't scared and I remembered how Jesus had been spat on. Well, she was so impressed with me ::gag:: that I had to keep telling the story to other JW's who all thought I was so brave, etc. ICK I was so brainwashed.

why dont KH have windows?
by Buck inis this to save money?
thats the only reason i can think of.

The first hall I attended did have windows, but they were covered by heavy, ugly curtains..that nasty, dark gold color. They built a new hall, and it didn't have any.
There was a new hall built for another congregation, and it did have windows for about a week...then, it was vandalized, so they put up criss cross boards on the outside and drywalled over them on the inside. It looked really stupid, especially for a brand new building! -

Do your parents still talk to you?
by scootergirl injust curious if your parents still have contact with you after you have been df'd/da'd.
mine have stood by w/strong convictions not to have contact w/me.
they have to have some being that i have kids that they want to see (but that is very minimal).

My parents talk to me all the time. My dad is a disbeliever, and I am an only child, I don't think my mom would ever stop talking to me.
I just stopped going when I was 16, 10 years ago now. I was never baptized, so I am not df or da, just Sis. ***'s daughter. The brothers and sisters ask about me all the time, want my mom to bring in pictures of my kids, I see them in the store and they say hi. I guess that is really strange after reading some of your stories. I have other JW family members too, no ill will at all.
I proofread my mom's talks to this day. I am glad she has faith, I respect that fully. I just don't agree with what she has faith in. I am trying to nudge her toward seeing the troubles and inconsistancies. Currently, she is finding for me an explanation for the generation thing. Judging from her tone, this is something that bothers her too.

I know I am late on this one, I just found this site because of this news story! Hit a little too close to home for me. This happened at the congregation that shares a hall with the cong. my mom took me too as a child. She still attends.
She told me that the news cameras were outside the hall to film footage of it when she was meeting for field service. The elder present told them not to talk to any media...didn't mention what was going on to anyone there.
That night at the meeting, she said that a witness made a comment as to how *the way these young girls dress* and the others agreed with him. Well, one girl was 5 when it happened and another was 8 when the abuse started.
The man's dad, an elder in the congregation to this day, spoke to the news media. He said his son (the above accused) said it was all lies. Then in the next sentence said that it was already taken care of by the elders years ago and that he has total faith in the organization.

I also looked for Dateline to have at least a summary of the broadcast on the website. I am very disappointed that it isn't.
My mom is a JW and we have been talking about these allegations. I am hoping, as she is a sexual abuse survivor, she will see the cover up for what it is.
She was at the Hall when the show aired, and she expected it to be on later as an elder told the bookstudy group that it was on at 10 eastern time.
I found the Dateline broadcast very informative, the WTBTS didn't choose to comment. Guess they didn't have enough time to spin things their way...
