What was the silliest thing taken away from you as a child because of its supposed evil influence?
I remember when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my mum gave me a copy of the 1812 overture. I remember it as a real cool gift at the time.
A few days later she sat me down and explained to me that she was going to take the record back because?have you guessed it yet ?because it has WAR cannons on it.
I was mortified at this, so much so that it?s a memory that has always stuck with me.
I guess she had a meeting in between times along the lines of ?beware of your music collection?
Anyone else had similar?

Was it the same for you all?
by Peppermint indo you think jehovah?s witnesses act differently in parts of the country or world other then your own?
witnesses claim that one congregation is just like another, sort of like mcdonalds.
however in my experience this does not seem to be true.

Do you think Jehovah?s Witnesses act differently in parts of the country or world other then your own?
Witnesses claim that one congregation is just like another, sort of like McDonalds. However in my experience this does not seem to be true.
When I first became a witness (aged 16) the congregation I joined was to be honest, enjoyable, open minded, and very liberal. The elders allowed us to party in large numbers, drink, go away on trips together, camping etc. All this was done in a spirit of trust.
The funny thing is although on the outside we may have appeared ?worldly? in JW. Circles, we were infact well behaved.
In other congregations near to us, the elders banned all their teens going on any of our trips. Those congregations contained bitter and angry young man and women, who conformed on the outside.
Alas during a growth period in the eighties my congregation split and everything changed, to be honest it may have been a bit of a one off. But it now shows me that oppressive rulemaking does no good.
I have also noted that witnesses in America seem to be controlled by the elders more then here in Europe. -

Help me find Hell picture, please.
by sleepy inhi , i'm looking for a picture that was in the societies books in the 70's or early eighties of a hell scene.
wasn't a witness picture , i believe it was from some eastern religion.
it featured people being tourtured in various ways in hell.

Not from an eastern background but the paintings of Bosch are worth looking at.

To be honest the whole suit thing wound me up more then anything.
I used to work in high-fashion menswear when I first started going to meetings. And although I was a good little JW, and would do anything I was told to do. I just could not bring myself to wear a suit.
My solution was to wear mix and match jackets and trousers, at least that way you could be a little more individual.
The flack I got for this was ridiculous.
Did any one else have this problem?
I remember thinking at the time, when my sins were being highlighted, your suit is made of nylon it?s creased has never been washed and is too small for you?but I suppose it does conform. -

As a JW did you "take a turkey" or accept the Xmas Bonus?
by confusedjw ini felt it hypocritical to take a turkey abviously meant for thanksgiving.
i didn't like buying the easter candy after easter either as it was "food sacrificed to idols".. years ago at a place i worked they gave out a xmas bonus which i returned.
( a few hundred dollars which we sure could have used) they assured me that it was an "end of the year" bonus.

I asked an elder once if I should.
He said it was fine and to view it as a thankyou for the work done that year.
I always thought this hypercritical, but took the turkey anyway.

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver.
I just love how she writes about nature and human emotion. Her book The Poisonwood Bible is a must for everyone here.

Milton Keynes Dons?????? What do you think about it?
by ozziepost inso wimbledon move to milton keynes and change their name.
up on the espn site is this story: wimbledon granted change of namelawrie sanchez insists wimbledon will not spoil the memory of his fa cup-winning goal for the club by changing their name to milton keynes dons.
music tycoon pete winkelman's intermk consortium were granted permission for the name change by the football league this week, following last season's controversial relocation to buckinghamshire.

Milton Keynes tried to steal my team a few years back. Thankfully they failed.
To me football is about history. You cannot choose your team it just belongs to you by virtue of where you are born, for good or for bad.
So its a sad day in my book.
But hey, worse things happen in this world.

Thank you everyone for the welcome.
In answer to Satan?s Little Helper I am in London.
As I mentioned I do not want to go into to much detail early on, but in brief I have been a JW since the age of 15 and have in all the years up to this point not questioned why? The rot (or not) set in when I moved away to another part of the country, away from those who originally studied with me (And who I liked). In my new environment I found myself with people I did not want to be with. I became quite unwell physically but found myself instead of being encouraged, being constantly looked down at by people who did not understand me. Anyway I just stopped going about 12 months ago moved back to the London area. Since then I have had the whole thing on my mind every day as in, what?s this JW thing all about? Hope to find all the answers soon.
