Back To School--School Uniforms, Good or Bad?

British kids wear school uniform, as has been commented.

    I think this is a pity for three reasons;

1/ All the puke about it levelling playing fiels etc. is poop. Kids can sort-out someone's socio-economic status even if they all wear the same clothes. Do people think kids are STUPID are something? I suppose you could require they attend school in white forensic suits and use standard equipment (pens etc.), ban all personal items, and use public transport to get them there... then it would be harder. But the most cited reason for school uniform is poop, it really is.

2/ Kids hate uniform. Loads of pointless time is spent by teachers enforcing uniform rules.

3/ Infantalisation. The English are the worst-dressed slobs in Europe. We practise wearing a uniform as untidily and as negligently as possible for years and get very good at it (or the boys do - the girls try to lolita-eaque their uniforms (shorten the skirts, wear a shirt a size too small, etc.). This means that when we go and work, if we wear 'smart business attire' we look like slobs as we have had no practise. At any meeting of Sales people for a pan-European company the English reps stand out as they look like sacks of shit in their suits. Hell, even our IT geeks look worse than other IT geeks. Deprived of developing style and taste at school, most people never recover. Dutch kids (no uniform) and AMerican kids (no uniform) seem more adult than English kids I have taught, age for age. Treat people like babies who can't dress themselves and you encourage them to behave like 'babies'.

Oh God, this is very close to home........and depressingly true.

When my colleaugues and I attend sales meetings in Europe, we are invariably the most formally attired. I think that there is something of a culture difference, as shirt, tie and suit is still the norm here in the UK for business wear, whereas ties and jackets are rarely seen (in my experience) in Europe. I know that I and a female colleague use suits as a uniform because we just don't have the confidence to put together a smart outfit. With my burgeoning bump, I have had to leave the suits in the wardrobe and actually think about what to wear, and I do feel more comfortable. I hope we don't look like sacks of shit though...........

What?!?! You mean a uniform won't make Johny industrious, quit throwing spit-balls at the wall, ignore the girls, quit snobbing folks, be satisfied with less-expensive clothing, or have better self esteem? Whud a thunk it???

I don't know if uniforms do anything for the young people or not. I would like to see a dress code be put into place. At least then, when I daily drive past the school, I wouldn't have my eyes assaulted by mass ugliness.

And speaking of communism/socialism; publicly funded schooling=socialism. So I don't feel that's even relevant in the debate.

    End of rant.

As a student, let me tell you that there are uniforms in school.

Brands and styles distinguish the elite from the amharrets.

I wear jeans, a tshirt, and boots everyday. Not to express myself, just because its comfortable. Don't mess with my deal.

I think uniforms should be manditory. Kids don't go to school to learn, but to put on a fashion show.

When I graduated girls couldn't wear short skirts or half-shirts, and guys couldn't wear tank tops or hats. This was close to 10 years ago. I ride by schools now and see the girls half naked and the guys sporting every type of hat you can imagine. No wonder kids are having sex at a younger and younger age.

    Praised be Jebus!

At 105, could your opinion be a bit out of date?

I don't think it's good for people to have sex before they're mature enough to handle the responsibility.

My parents had a group of 15-17 year olds come to a pool party last year, and...no...they shouldn't be having any form of sex outside of masturbation. Maybe two kids out of the group of 12 acted like they had their heads screwed on straight.

well, thats a strict variable for such a broad experiment.

Were thses kids witnesses? That effects a lot.
