With VCRs so plentiful in almost every home, a special meeting would not stop anyone from taping it and watching it later. I have NBC e-mail me daily notices of what is coming up on Dateline as well. VCRs meant I didn't have to stay home any more from meetings to see my favorite shows.

A few quick questions about the dateline programme. Is it known when it will be aired? How long will the piece be? What format does it take - is it a sixty minutes kind of thing? Is Dateline a high profile show? I come from the UK so I guess I'll miss this entirely. Is Kent or Randall or someone else going to put it on the net?
    Thanks

Believe me, if pornography on the Internet, cable, and videos is such an important topic at the DC, it means JWs are not listening to the counsel and are doing and watching whatever they want in their own home. NBC is not a special channel devoted to porn, etc. I'm positive everyone will be home watching it with the drapes drawn or taping it on video for viewing later.

    Spider,

    Welcome and hi.

Dateline is part of the American lamestream press' attempt at investigative jounalism much like 60 minutes. They have some good shows and some really stupid segments. I think their most utterly stupidest segment had to be the use of a computer generated White House model showing how it was impossible for Clinton to have sex with "that woman". But they do have good segments like last weeks on the dangers of roller coasters.

Usually there are 3 segments that last about 20 minutes each (for a total of 1 hour) but on occassion they will do a complete one hour show.

It is on usually 2 to 3 times a week and runs in prime time (airs between 8 to 11 pm). I do not consider dateline a "high profile" show but if they do a lot of promos and it is "aired" on the right date ratings could be high. Usually millions will be watching but don't forget - 281 million people legally live in the USA and another 33 million in Canada.

Again the key is to watch how it is played on NBC. If they (the news executives) think they have a winner story they will promote it like crazy on their other news shows and that my friend is when all hell breakes lose.

Oh, one other thingy not too many on this board probably realize. Bush is pushing the faith based charity stuff in the USA and the liberal media are trying to turn it against him. This story of peds in the WTS, could get "legs" if (and a big if) the news executives at some of the larger media outlets such as the New York Slimes run with it as a reason why we shouldn't trust religious organizations using government money for helping the poor. If the Slimes puts this story on the front page, the liberal news stations (CBS, NBC, ABC and of course CNN) will run and run and run with the story on their news casts. It could hurt Bush's image and proposal which is what they want, but for us we get the story out to protect the children.

    (p.s. - 48 hours, 60 minutes, 60 minutes II (CBS), 20/20 (ABC) are similar)

    Howdy Canadian Hawk,

I think their most utterly stupidest segment -hawk

I thought usa citizens (mercuns) were the only ones who slaughtered the English language. Good to know we have company, now and again.

They will be getting an innocent little flyer in the mail once I find out what date the program is airing.

An interesting thought that I've not seen before. Remembering that jw's are infamous for not reading anything negative - what would you suggest that the innocent flyer say that would encourage jw's to watch Dateline?

    Hello Bill/SilentLambs

Hope it's ok to call you by name?

If you were to review the BOE letters from 92-98, in not one place does it state that elders should encourage victims or parents of victims to go to local police. Instead they are cautioned about discussing the matter with anyone. Elders will invariably discuss the bringing of reproach on the congregation or Jehovah, thus discouraging any report being made to authorities.

This is what happened to me - but the "cautioned" was spiced with the threat of being before a committee for the sin of slander.

Hence the victim is victimized again and left on there on with little support or help from the congregation.

No help from the congregation would be more like it. If it's kept silent - who knows to help. Besides, mention the words "incest" or "child abuse" and tag a brother/sister's name on to it - and the average victim will get silence anyway.

We've been taught not to talk about "discouraging" things, now haven't we?

I'm looking forward to the Dateline show.

Sorry about the writing style, Waiting. Sometimes I get busy and don't really have time to re-read stuff.

As for the flyer - I will be working with someone on this shortly. I will let you see it when completed.

    Hey Hawk,

You did know that I was kidding, didn't you? I don't go in for too many smiley faces (as I think they can be overused a tad). But, in all honesty, anybody who says "y'all ain't raight in the head" doesn't have room to jerk anybody around, wouldn't you agree?

Will look forward to some flyer guidelines - if you feel like sharin'.
