I and others here have always stated that the question was not if Iraq had WMD, but where did they go? Looks like some here were too quick to judge the US on this issue...

Funny too that the Liberal Press is not picking up the story...

UN inspectors: Saddam shipped out WMD before war and after

    SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM

    Friday, June 11, 2004

The United Nations has determined that Saddam Hussein shipped weapons of mass destruction components as well as medium-range ballistic missiles before, during and after the U.S.-led war against Iraq in 2003.

The UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission briefed the Security Council on new findings that could help trace the whereabouts of Saddam's missile and WMD program.

The briefing contained satellite photographs that demonstrated the speed with which Saddam dismantled his missile and WMD sites before and during the war. Council members were shown photographs of a ballistic missile site outside Baghdad in May 2003, and then saw a satellite image of the same location in February 2004, in which facilities had disappeared.

UNMOVIC acting executive chairman Demetrius Perricos told the council on June 9 that "the only controls at the borders are for the weight of the scrap metal, and to check whether there are any explosive or radioactive materials within the scrap," Middle East Newsline reported.

"It's being exported," Perricos said after the briefing. "It's being traded out. And there is a large variety of scrap metal from very new to very old, and slowly, it seems the country is depleted of metal."

"The removal of these materials from Iraq raises concerns with regard to proliferation risks," Perricos told the council. Perricos also reported that inspectors found Iraqi WMD and missile components shipped abroad that still contained UN inspection tags.

He said the Iraqi facilities were dismantled and sent both to Europe and around the Middle East. at the rate of about 1,000 tons of metal a month. Destionations included Jordan, the Netherlands and Turkey.

The Baghdad missile site contained a range of WMD and dual-use components, UN officials said. They included missile components, reactor vessel and fermenters ?? the latter required for the production of chemical and biological warheads.

"It raises the question of what happened to the dual-use equipment, where is it now and what is it being used for," Ewen Buchanan, Perricos's spokesman, said. "You can make all kinds of pharmaceutical and medicinal products with a fermenter. You can also use it to breed anthrax."

The UNMOVIC report said Iraqi missiles were dismantled and exported to such countries as Jordan, the Netherlands and Turkey. In the Dutch city of Rotterdam, an SA-2 surface-to-air missile, one of at least 12, was discovered in a junk yard, replete with UN tags. In Jordan, UN inspectors found 20 SA-2 engines as well as components for solid-fuel for missiles.

"The problem for us is that we don't know what may have passed through these yards and other yards elsewhere," Buchanan said. "We can't really assess the significance and don't know the full extent of activity that could be going on there or with others of Iraq's neighbors."

UN inspectors have assessed that the SA-2 and the short-range Al Samoud surface-to-surface missile were shipped abroad by agents of the Saddam regime. Buchanan said UNMOVIC plans to inspect other sites, including in Turkey.

In April, International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Mohammed El Baradei said material from Iraqi nuclear facilities were being smuggled out of the country.

    It's a nice story.

When the US invaded Iraq, Iraq fought back . . . and they are still fighting. You mean to tell me that they got rid of all their most powerful weapons just so they could go toe to toe with the US using pea-shooters and rubber band guns? It makes absolutely no sense to go to war with an invading nation and not use the weapons you have at your disposal, dismantle them instead and send them abroad just to save face. Why get rid of them before, during and after the U.S.-led war against Iraq in 2003? You know you will defininitely get the crap blown out of you and there will be nothing left to bring those WMD's that were shipped abroad home to. You did it why? To save face . . . ? Seems clear that Iraq was intent on saving more than just face when they began resisting the US invasion.

The briefing contained satellite photographs that demonstrated the speed with which Saddam dismantled his missile and WMD sites before and during the war.

Has anyone seen these photographs? Then there should also be satellite photos of a few large trucks hauling these components out of Iraq. to the tune of 1,000 tons of metal a month, eh? Can't wait to see those.

I'm not saying it is not true, but I have not seen any such reports on the mainstream news channels, CNN, CNBC or FOX.

blah blah blah, more republican neocon bullshit

Tell me, what are weapons for exactly? Aren't they what you use when your biggest enemy is at the gate?

Funny too that the Liberal Press is not picking up the story

Well, respected news agencies probably want the story to have a few extra features like facts and truth before they run it !!

BTW: Give me the reasons again for spending so much on spy satelites and spy planes? What exactly do they achieve?

Simon... why do you quickly dismiss something? I remember a couple of months ago something came up about the Brits abusing Iraqi prisoners.... it was immediately dismissed. Last night, on cable there was a quick printed blurb that 4 British soldiers were being charged with abuse. Why don't we take a wait and see what happens. I don't know any American that is as anti-Republican as you are... and you don't even live here. All political parties are just that.....POLITICAL... the all have the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (that's probably why I'm registered Independent).

Well, I'm just going off what the government itself now admits - that it got things dead wrong on WoMD.

It seems that a few "true believers" are having trouble adjusting to the new light from their mother organisation.

This isn't even worth debating anymore, anyone interested can read for themselves after doing a search on Google:

Powell Admits Major Screwup in False Terrorism Report
    Pants on fire
    Powell admits WMD claims wrong
    Powell Admits False WMD Claim
Powell admits to feeding fake report to UN on Iraq
Intelligence on Iraq was wrong, admits Powell

    This one is particularly good:

    Republicans Can't Handle the Truth

Yet Hannity goes right on giving Bush the benefit of the doubt he never gave Clinton (for good reason). And his arguments in his defense grow shriller and more sophomoric by the day. Here's the general thrust of what he argues each day during what amounts to a free, three-hour Bush campaign commercial:

    • If you criticize Bush, you're a Democrat; and it doesn't matter if you aren't, because you might as well be, you closet liberal, you.
    • If you criticize the Iraq war, you're a traitor ? or worse, a Dixie Chicks fan.
    • If you condemn the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, you don't support the troops and are undermining the war effort.
    • If you question the timing of Iraq regime change in the middle of a war on al-Qaeda, you love Saddam.
    • If you don't link Iraq and Afghanistan in the war on terrorism, you're a hair-splitting wimp who can't see that all "ragheads" need a good beatin' after 9-11.
    • If you hear negative news, it's liberal news.

But before they can do that, they have to own up to some truths themselves. Here's a quick test to gauge your own intellectual honesty. Circle Yes or No after each question:

    1. Do you still believe Bush's claim that Iraq was a "direct threat" to America? Y / N
    2. Before Bush launched Operation Iraqi Freedom, did you ever say, "You know, honey, we really need to free those poor people in Iraq?" Y / N
    3. With anti-Saddam Shi?ites now joining Sunnis in fighting U.S.-led occupation forces, do you still believe Bush when he says "terrorists" and "Saddam loyalists" are behind the resistance, and not nationalists? Y / N
    4. With Iraqis now attacking Americans at a rate of 60 ambushes a day, do you still buy Bush's argument that Americans have to stay in Iraq to protect Iraqis, that we're the answer to the security problem and not the source of it? Y / N
    5. Were any "terrorists" killing Americans in Iraq before Bush invaded Iraq? Y / N
    6. Was capturing Saddam more urgent to the war on terrorism than capturing Osama bin Laden, as the president sold it? Y / N

If you answered Yes to all of the above, you support the war simply to support Bush.

You can no longer honestly say the war was to protect America. The weapons of mass destruction fraud has been exposed. Even Colin Powell admits peddling lies. And we now know the secret National Intelligence Estimate Bush used to justify invasion concluded that Saddam had no role in al-Qaeda's operations or its attacks on Americans.

Simon.. along with your anti-Republican list, I can cut and paste a anti-Democratic list and post it along side. Right now politicians are asking John Kerry to resign from the senate because he only voted in 14 of the past 112 votes (most candidates resign their jobs when they run for President). A very important vote to extend unemployment benefits lost by ONE vote... guess who wasn't there being a "friend" to the working class.... KERRY. Like I said, Politics is just that POLITICS.... both sides have dirty laundry.
