  It means most of the wealth and power in the US is concentrated in the hands of a few but the average American hasn't woken up to the fact and lets them get away with it.

  While the 'great economic miracle' we get presented looks impressive, the fact is that the average American is no better off now than they were in the 1970's. Yes, there has been growth, but its increasingly concentrated in the hands of the few and they manipulate the system to keep it there.

  I read an article in the NYT that said this:

  1% of the nation is in the top 1% of the nation for wealth (obviously) BUT

  20% THINK they are in the top 1% AND

  20% more think they soon will be.

  This explains a great deal, in my opinion.
