What struck me about this interview was that Gay Byrne seemed to be saddened by what Stephen said, it was as though his belief system had just crumbled.
After he had time to collect his thoughts, he has said that as an interviewer he will not express his own beliefs in case this inhibits interviewees who may not wish to offend him. Plausible, but sounds like an excuse for the fact that he had no suitable come-back to Mr Fry.
