Nothing will change ... the child abuse scandals come and go, they survive them - pay some fines, and carry on.

What people miss is that they exist because they fill a niche. If they didn't exist, then something else would fill it, and look almost identical.

Same applies for Mormons and every other religion. It's like shops on a high-street with different branding to appeal to different customers. They are there because there is demand for them.

There's an unlimited amount of information about them, and yet people will still sign up and join, because people are stupid.

No different to all the many multi-level marketing schemes about - why would anyone sign up to sell them ... and yet people do.

Once you're past a certain scale you really have to fuck up majorly to fail.

They are in a tax-free business - how can you possibly fail when you have volunteer labor and you don't have to pay taxes? And now they don't even have to print and distribute magazines, they become a media company which is cheaper still.

Consider the Worldwide Church of God, the church as Herbert Armstrong created is gone. After he died, the father and son team of Joseph Tkach Sr. and Joseph Jr. discarded ALL of Armstrong's teachings and it became mainstream. But Armstrong had diehard followers and some 350 offshoots, all claiming to continue his legacy were formed. If the Watchtower was shut down and went bankrupt because of all the lawsuits. The Jehovah's Witnesses would continue. Just like the Bible Students survived after Russell died.

I'm with Simon's analysis above on this. I think they will just continue to amble along with moderate growth overall - probably already in long term decline in most first world countries but more than offset by the third world. Financially they have ring fenced most of their assets in "independent" holding and service companies ( such as the IBSA and Kingdom Halls Trust ) so they will be safe from any major legal claims.

I guess the main issue they have is the none-arrival of Armageddon - this is a religion with a big sell by date on its ass ( unlike the Mormons , for example. ) . Admittedly they have got away with it since 1879. They have fudged this for decades with recent changes to the "generation doctrine" , for example , which has bought them another 30 years or so but eventually they need to find some kind of new work-around solution - maybe 1914 ultimately will be ditched.

The JW religion is for individuals whose desperate need is for an ultimate relief from the pressures of the mundane world. To listen to JWs means they can grasp at this straw. It is for those who desire this hope regardless of the reason or evidence supporting it or not.

This is the fodder which feeds the stomach of the JW organisation and there are plenty of uneducated, poor and lost souls wandering this planet for whom this religion is the cure-all.

It is hard to make prophecy, the JWs know that. I am sure they will change some doctrines like 1914, but the harsh rules are needed if you want numbers. If they give up on refusing to participate in military, blood doctrine and shunning, they will loose most of their millions of followers. Some need that stuff and they are ready to provide

Cult's heyday is over in this country (presently) other than real estate development/flips and illegal immigrants' infux, It will take yrs for the senior die-off - their offspring & their lineage to bolt.

They've one heck of a schtick (everlasting life on earth is a winner and never dying - tough to beat) and there's no shortage of hurting individuals - life is difficult/painful so one mammoth harvest awaits their next fantasy, recruitment episode.

Hopefully, legislation will be passed to protect the innocent from the criminal cult and FaceBook/stations like Oxygen, etc., will help spread the news - it's come a long way. Politicians should prove that they care about the children and people of the country instead of the filty rich corps.
