How safe is personal information when elders do not follow their instructions?

    FOR ELDERS
    1. Reminder on how to seek assistance from the Hospital Liaison Committee (HLC): Some HLC members have reported that elders have provided their contact information to publishers without having previously contacted the HLC. As indicated in the Shepherding book, when a publisher requests HLC assistance, an elder should first contact the HLC to provide necessary information. (sfl chap. 11 par. 8) It is the HLC member that will provide the contact information that is to be given to the publisher. Additionally, the elder will remind the publisher that if in the future he once again needs HLC assistance, he should request
up-to-date contact information from an elder.⸺sfl chap. 11 par. 9.

The WT generally has a shocking disregard for privacy of personal information. GDPR aside, even in countries not subject to GDPR, they seem to have no regard for privacy.

Local congregation here (midwest US) asked for contact name and phone number of someone outside the area who might know our whereabouts if we were out of contact for some reason. Of course I refused; you would have thought I was some kind of apostate or something.

    LOL

That's not just a Midwest US thing, it's a worldwide thing.

Elders are directed to create an "emergency contact list" of every single member in the congregation. As you note, it is supposed to be someone you would flee to, or at least contact, in the event of an undefined "emergency".

It was put into place following Hurricane Katrina. Tens of thousands of JWs had to flee their homes at essentially a moment's notice, ending up hundreds of miles away. Elders had no clue who, or how many, of their congregation had made it out, nor how to contact them.

That's when all the hoo-hah about "go-bags" started as well.

And yes, if you don't provide your "emergency contact information" to the elders, you will get increasingly frequent and urgent "loving reminders" to do so.

You don't have to rely on the elders and congregations to bail you out.

You can just rely on the local directions of local authorities.

You can survive and get by without the elders just fine.

Just another way of making the followers feel more reliant on "them", infantilized.

My elder leader is helpless. I have to aid him. The real help comes from neighbors, secular organizations, churches,police/ fire, National guard

Didn't we used to provide emergency contacts when we filled out the 'no blood' cards? Since we signed those and had an additional witness signature, would that be legally sufficient for sharing certain information?

They don't use the term "bug-out bag"? 😆
