Evidence for a Young Earth

Over the weekend I saw a stalagmite that was about 2 million years old, and it is still alive and growing. The science currently will not give you exact year the first deposit was made, but through statistical measure they can present with a degree of confidence that the stalagmite is old 2 million years.

Stalagmites are a perfect example of this discussion. How many millions of years did this take to form?

Because the chemical process for stalactites forming in limestone caves is different to those formed on concrete ceilings.

As I mentioned in the first response on this thread Perry, places like Talk Origins have the information to hand to explain these type of arguments.

Again, you comparing two different items in a different environment. Not the same. The may look to you the same, but they are not.

    Kaik,

The caption claims the environment is virtually identical to a nearby famous cave.

George Rogers Clark Memorial is built on the bank of the Wabash River at Vincennes, Indiana. The limestone came from Bedford Quarry, near Bedford, Indiana, just six miles from the entrance of Blue Springs Cave, one of the most beautifully decorated caves in the nation. Water percolates down through cracks in the memorial building into the basement as it does in the cave and the result is the same kind of formations as found in the cave.

It certainly looks identical to cave formations claimed to be millions of years old. A better explanation is not that the chemical make up might be different, but that the rate of mineral deposit varied from what ever testing was originally done to determine the rate of mineral flow.

This huge mineral mound was cause by a farmer's field pipe that was left flowing for 100 years and formed this mineral rich deposit. It is called the Teepee Formation in Thermopolis, Wyoming.

Here's some beautiful formations in a manmade tunnel. Notice the sign.

Do you think because they look identical to you that they formed in the same way? That's a heck of an assumption. You are comparing Apple's and oranges. A diamond and synthetic diamond look the same, but they were formed by a very different process.

Limestone caves dissolve at a very slow, consistent rate that can be measured. You simply cannot compare stalagtites that form naturally in a cave with mineral deposits from a farmer's field, or a cement basement. In cement the rock has already been crushed and dissolved, greatly speeding up the process. In a limestone cave the process happens naturally and that process takes time. Barometric dating puts the stalagtites in limestone caves at 190,000 years

    From Konceptuals link above:

The fast-growing stalactites form via processes very different from calcium carbonate stalactites found in limestone caves. Limestone is not soluble in water. When carbon dioxide (from decaying plants in the soil above the cave) mixes with water, it forms a very weak carbonic acid. This turns the calcium carbonate into calcium bicarbonate, which dissolves. When drips are exposed to air in the cave, a little carbon dioxide escapes from them into the atmosphere, which reverses the process and precipitates a small amount of calcium carbonate. The upper average rate for limestone stalactite growth is ten centimeters per thousand years, with lower growth rates outside of tropical areas.

Again, the hassle of dealing with claims made by someone who has not bothered to actually learn about the subject they are commenting on... Perry, virtually every post you make only proves you know so little about the subjects you talk about that you actually think what you post is correct and relevant to the discussion! Either that or you are a troll; it is truly hard to decide which you are.

Millions of years is pretty slow!

It is amazing how the mineral deposits know how to grow slowly in caves but quickly in environments that contradict the naturalism ideology.

    Conspiracy!

formations claimed to be millions of years old.

Claimed? The process that creates stalactites and stalagmites is well understood and established in all universities all over the world from USA to Russia to China to Germany, to every country that has department of Earth science and mineralogy. The only problem with the process exists with a population in region that was visited by Sherman in 1864-65. There is a difference between limestone creation in enclosed cave system and man-made structures where mineral is gypsum . It involves different chemistry, mechanics, and physics (chemical composition, acidity of the rainwater, cave humidity, etc).

Perry is the definition of confirmation bias.

So far Young Earth believers were not able to prove that the Earth is indeed 7000 years old.

    actually learn about the subject

Of course, but it would involve to really take science classes and do actual work with the apparatus. It is different from the faith-based beliefs. To him it is easy to compare goat and table. Both have four legs, so they must be similar.
