Where did this letter come from? How did it get into your possession Reporter? Were you an elder dealing with the case? Do you have the original copy of the letter?

There is a very simple way the organization could handle an instance like this. I suggested something similar in a letter to the Society regarding a confessed pedophile being reinstated after only six months. It avoids the whole sticky issue of clergy confidentiality which they seem to be in such in a tizzy over. Simply tell this individual, he needs to report his wrongdoing to the police, or be disfellowshipped, and tell him he is not getting reinstated until he has.

I realize this is not the perfect solution, and the idea that they knowingly hide criminals is appalling to me. But it would be a better policy than what they have now.

    pettygrudger,

: This still does not invalidate the clergy confidentiality situation however.

Since when have elders and elderettes respected and trusted and followed the rules of "clergy confidentiality?" That term is a joke as practiced in Watchtower World(tm). Within a few days, everyone knows what's going on. It was that way thirty years ago, and it's that way now. These are loose-lipped window-washers we're dealing with, not trained professionals, you know.

Furthermore, the WTS and its dupes rely on the legal protection offered by "clergy confidentiality," but don't actually practice it. In fact, "clergy confidentiality" means "don't tell ANYONE, even the Pope", but in Watchtower World(tm) it means "don't tell anyone in the congregation (but your wife who you already told it to blabs to everyone else, anyway), but you MUST tell your religious leaders in Brooklyn. Or God will kill you." THAT is what it means in the psycho world of Watchtower Land(tm).

This is yet another legal and ethical shield Watchtower Leaders(tm) use to their benefit, while they blithely ignore the whole intent and purpose of "clergy confidentiality."

Wake UP, folks! They are playing the law and you like a violin, and they don't even care about simple morals or ethics.

Abso-fricking-lutely. They love to hide behind the law and use the law to benefit them, but, when called upon to support the legal system and secular justice, they turn the back of their collective heads and ignore the fact that the rest of the world is out here and exists!

Another example is when they try to wield the copyright laws to benefit them, in order to prevent the circulation of embarrasing material which clearly proves that their organization is NOT inspired by Jehovah or any other divine entity, save perhaps the occult and the demonic personalities. Kent Steinhaug was a prime example of a victim of this heavy-handedness, yet the Flock book still remains online! They try to hide behind "copyright" in the same fashion that they try to hide behind "clergy confidentiality". Special pleading and provincialism, they have played to the max. Nothing they preach applies to themselves!

When it comes to reporting criminality and abuse to police, obeying privacy legislation, or even common decency, the WTS has been proven to turn a blind eye, more often then not. Which is what you expect when you are dealing with cheese-and-cracker men, as opposed to true experts in professional fields, backed by years of study and real-world experience.
