My problem with nominating someone like A.G. Bell, the Wright Brothers or any other inventor is that things tend to get invented when the underlying science makes it posssible. The phone,airplane, light bulb etc. were all being looked into by various people at the time. If Bell or Edison or the Wright Brothers did not exist, someone else would have developed it and things would basically be the same.
Someone like Malcolm X, while an inspiring story, would not have changed American history too much had he not lived. I think it's difficult to argue with the standard answer when this question arises. Lincoln. It's quite possible that there would be no Union had a different man been in office during the War of Northern Agression. Of course one might also point to Robert E. Lee and the fact that had he not sent Picket up the middle at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, the South would have routed the North and July 4 1863 might be considered Confederate Independence Day.
