SK does not have the same type of halo type system as Israel. Basically, they have to depend on THAAD, which works well for singular missile attacks, but not so much for a barrage of artillery. NK would for a certainty unload on Seoul if we made a preemptive attack.

The options are not good and our "leadership" is useless, to put it mildly.

Also, China will be of no help. The Chinese use NK as a buffer to limit US influence in the region, despite what they officially state. That will not change. They are the ultimate pragmatists, and see this crisis to their advantage, long-term.

If NK succeeds in its ambitions to develop a viable nuclear missile there is a high likelihood that it will launch a nuclear attack on the west coast of the US.

Do you really think so? I highly doubt this. I don't think NK is keen on having itself wiped out of the map in exchange of temporary self gratification from a strike on the US.

They have a much bigger issue with South Korea and could already strike them with a nuke. Yet they don't because they understand what that means..

The US will have to do it quickly and thoroughly to prevent them from striking back at US allies and US territories in the region.

No they wont. This would be insanity. You could kiss Seoul bye bye.

The US will surely look for an alternative measure, just like Obama did with Iran. I personally think the US should work hard on getting the fat boy assassinated.

    done4good - Interesting info thanks.

revip - NK do not yet have the capability to launch a nuclear missile at anybody. Reducing the size their bombs to make it possible to put on a rocket is a challenge they have yet to conquer.

NK is an irrational cult. Hatred for the US is its central tenet of faith. Movies of the USA burning up in a nuclear conflagration are normal on state TV. It is a national mental illness. Imagine having a psychopath living next door to you who screams constantly about how much he wants to murder you and your family. ONce NK has a viable weapon it will effectively be living next door.

I do think it will attack America if it can't be persuaded otherwise. NK is not Iran. Not even similar.

How it's viewed here, Australia, re North Korea.

Gareth Evans, former Foreign Minister says ""Sheer dumb luck we've avoided a nuclear holocaust".

So now we have two rogue states that are trying to obtain Nuclear weapons North korea and Iran .both of which could cause havoc on the world scene if they achieve it.

Why is China so reluctant to bring her ally North Korea into line ? despite the provocations they are sending to the USA ?

Will Israel an ali of the USA tolerate a nuclear Iran ? who threatens there destruction ?

Why is China provoking her neihbours in fortifying man made Islands in the South China seas ?

Could it be they want to stretch the American presence around the world where they cant possibly defend all of their commitments ? to their allies ?

And then take advantage of that ?

    Just saying/asking

    any thoughts ?

Will Israel an ali of the USA tolerate a nuclear Iran ? - no, Israel won't. An Iran with nuclear weapons would nuke Israel, or try to.

Could it be they want to stretch the American presence around the world where they cant possibly defend all of their commitments ? to their allies ?

And then take advantage of that ? - I don't know. NK just hates America. I don't think there's any more to it than that for NK. I don't know what China's long-term plan is.

US cannot stop NK without military force and NK is not going to back down because of US threats and yippiddy yap as NK military taunts and torture of US citizens prove.

Only now when NK claims they can deliver an international nuclear package is the US saying they will do something about stopping NK. Well, how about stopping them before they got to this stage? They couldn't, otherwise they would have. And now, they can't stop them either without military force. The US invaded Iraq, killed SH and his family overthrowing that government -which stands as a warning against weak dictators that won't play ball with US. How weak is NK?

If NK already has nukes, it is too late to stop them. Amidst all the internal US problems, war with NK at this time could cripple the US more.

What is likely to happen is a diplomatic settlement wherein the US will have to play ball with NK same as the world has to do with China, Russia and Pakistan - try stopping them from having nukes.

One of the biggest blunders in US history.

If NK already has nukes, it is too late to stop them

It doesn't have one it can deliver with a missile - yet.

the US will have to play ball with NK

The thing is, NK doesn't want anything from the US. It just wants a weapon it can use to nuke you.

The reason why NK is allowed to do this because China (and Russia) likes their little barrier state. If "Dear Leader" goes out of control, I foresee China quickly making an end to it but all it is right now is saber rattling, they got a ICBM, so what, they have had rockets for quite a few decades now but can't seem to get their rockets to launch consistently and every time they get one step "closer" to annihilation, their missiles mysteriously start failing again.

This NK nuke thing has been going on for decades. Initially they were firing on fishing boats, then they downed an American aircraft, they started testing nukes more than 10 years ago under Bush. Sanctions against NK were started when Obama first got into office and Bush and Clinton did the same. It's theater at it's best, China/Russia needs something from the US so they'll let NK out to play for a few months and then they'll muzzle it again.
