  When we talk about mass shootings we're likely talking about the U.S. where (For better or for worse) weapons are as common as grass and the ability to carry concealed is a legal right in a number of states.
  

  Simon and LUHE are talking about a city where anything larger than the tiniest of pocket knives is illegal to carry in a public place. The logistics of law enforcement are understandably different when illegal weapons are that easily concealed.

  Here in the U.S. law enforcement definitely does associate certain crimes with certain profiles. Immediately after the Oklahoma City Bombing, for example, authorities had a good idea what type of person they were looking for. --An angry white male.

  Two innocent men who seemed to fit that profile were dragged out of their hotel room in Springfield MO and treated quite roughly.

  Again, there is the typical delusion about how illegal immigrants get here. They come by plane for the most part. Let's stick to the facts.

  And what does this have to do with immigrants anyway? Where is the correlation between these stabbing and the fact that they are immigrants? Or illegal immigrants for that matter?

  And that the millions that recently arrived in Europe didn't come by land or boat?

  Sorry, that's partly based on a Washington post political hit piece as the reference so I find it hard to take seriously.

  The fact is that stop-and-search is effective at reducing the ability of people to carry weapons which has an affect on crime. The problem is that it's unpalatable to the PC brigade because it relies on stopping people who are identifiable as the groups most likely to be conducting that crime which is usually on race grounds.

  It's done because it works. It's stopped because people start valuing other things ahead of the crime figures.

  Funny that airport security has been brought up (as though illegal immigrants arrive via planes) because that is an example of stop-and-search for everyone. It makes sense when people are getting on a plane because you can devote the resources to it compared to the devastating cost of failure. When people are on the street you don't have the ability to stop everyone so instead you play the numbers - who's most likely to be carrying a knife? Stop those people - usually youths dressed and acting a certain way. Don't stop 8 year old girls and grandmothers until and unless they start being responsible for knife attacks. If you aren't carrying a knife and get stopped a lot then your complaint is with the other members of your group that make it necessary.

  The most important right people have is the right to life and that is the one that should be defended first. Sacrificing people's lives based on a desire not to offend people is ... well, it's stupid and misguided.

  I don't know about the "for the most part", but there are huge numbers who do fly in with a valid visa, and overstay the visa, and thus are counted as "illegal immigrants".

  If police question a witness to a crime and the witness says the crime was committed by one person, the police will ask for a description.

  If the witness says 5 ft 10'', medium-build, ginger haired young male that that's what the police will look for.

  Middle-aged black guys, little Chinese ladies and mixed-race lesbians needn't worry. They're not under suspicion. Only 5 ft 10'' gingers would come under suspicion and would be stopped and searched..

  A ginger hate crime?

  Oh noes, someone has noticed the fundamental issue that kind of destroys most of the "police are racialists!!!" claims - the arrest stats pretty much match the crime stats when it comes to descriptions of the criminals.

  Yeah, the whole idea that black people are arbitrarily arrested for being black? That's pure nonsense invented by racists and criminals who, as for other areas of life, want a lower standard to be applied "to make things fair".

  Profiling is something everyone does every day and it's idiotic to suggest the police shouldn't do it as part of their job. Take it to the extreme - a woman reports a black 6'4" heavily built mugger attacked her, should the police really stop an equal number of 5'2" petite white women to make things "fair"? Bonkers.
