The rank and file by and large somehow are able to completely deny this as apostate rumour. When I told my mother about it and she asked another sister, she was accused of looking at apostate material!

I never thought it would be possible Hmmm, but you took a 45 page thread and cut it down to 400 words (or less).

Did an excellent job, not leaving any important facts out, either.

    Nicely done!

    Realist,

Are you asking why the WT really wanted membership, or why the UN would allow them after 70 years of bad-mouthing?

The real reason the WT wanted to be associated was probably for political clout. When joining the DPI, they could choose from a number of specific areas (e.g. education). They chose Human Rights. They probably wanted to use their affiliation to gain favor in parts of Africa and Europe. For example, they've been petitioning the French government for recognition for years, and would have loved to point to ten years working with the UN's Human Rights branch as proof that they weren't a looney cult.

When the UN was contacted about the way they'd been characterized by the WT in their literature, they said they had no idea that was the case.* They did convene a meeting to discuss the situation, and the WT's future involvement with them when the society contacted them and withdrew. Basically, they disassociated themselves before they could be disfellowshipped.

*As a side point. I find it pretty funny that they talk about their great preaching work, and used to say it was pivotal in the separating of sheep from goats, yet most worldly people could only point out one or two JW teachings; and until last year, the UN was unaware of the things the JWs had been saying about them since before their inception. 125 years of preaching and the only thing people know about them is they don't celebrate holidays and frequently predict the end of the world. Some legacy.

When did the DPI relationship with NGOs begin?

The importance of working with and through NGOs as an integral part of United Nations information activities was recognized when the Department of Public Information was first established in 1946. The General Assembly, in its resolution 13 (I), instructed DPI and its branch offices to:

"...actively assist and encourage national information services, educational institutions and other governmental and non-governmental organizations of all kinds interested in spreading information about the United Nations. For this and other purposes, it should operate a fully equipped reference service, brief or supply lecturers, and make available its publications, documentary films, film strips, posters and other exhibits for use by these agencies and organizations."

In 1968, the Economic and Social Council, by Resolution 1297 (XLIV) of 27 May, called on DPI to associate NGOs, bearing in mind the letter and spirit of its Resolution 1296 (XLIV) of 23 May 1968, which stated that an NGO "...shall undertake to support the work of the United Nations and to promote knowledge of its principles and activities, in accordance with its own aims and purposes and the nature and scope of its competence and activities".
