As you are aware, Shunned Father, Mr. Lawrence Hughes is battling the WTS with respect to allowing his daughter to have life saving blood transfusions. Lawrence has won the first court case but the Watchtower in Canada has now taken to the supreme court of Canada.

    This case is called:

    Case filed Number 29174
    B.H., et al.
    v.
The Director of Child Welfare for the Province of Alberta, et al.
    (Alta.) (Civil) (By Leave)
They are at the stage of deciding whether the supremes will hear the case (called leave to appeal). A panel of 3 of the nine (or is it 11 ... hmmm) supremes will decide whether to grant "leave to appeal" and hear the case.

Lawrence Hughes is an intervenor in this case and he is supporting Child Welfare's case that the daughter is not old enough to make her own decisions and that the Province (like State) must decide on the girl's treatment. B.H. is the daughter who is arguing that she is an adult and not a minor and she wants to make her own decisions - such as not receiving a life saving blood transfusion. Of course in the background, telling the young girl and her mother and other sister what to say and paying for her legal fees is the Watchtower (or as I would like to call them the ________).

Below my name is the update from the Supreme Court of Canada as to what has gone on in the case. You can access this yourself by going to this url - http://209.47.227.134/scripts/hsrun.hse/haht51/SCC_CASE/SCC_CASE.htx;start=HS_scc_case?lang=0 and typing in the case number "29174". Then in the next window click on the underlined case number that shows up (29174)

Sadly the Watchtower has started another custody trial against the Alberta Children Services with Lawrence's daughter. This is trial number 2 and will start on June 17, 2002. According to Lawrence, the Director and Lawyer of Children Services do not want to spend money on this second case. Why? Well according to Lawrence, they are involved in another separate lawsuit that the WTS has launched against them over another little baby receiving a blood transfusion. It has scared the Director of Children Services to the point that the Alberta Children Services is only calling 1 Witness in Trial 2 involving Lawrence's daughter.

Just as sadly, Lawrence had gathered a lot of evidence he wanted called by the Children Services but they refuse to help.

Further (can it get any sadder?) Lawrence has paid his lawyer, Mr. Robert Calvert $8,000 of his $80,000 dollar bill. Mr. Calvert REFUSES to do any more work for Lawrence until he get paid!!!!! So Lawrence is going to be on his own without legal representation - a dangerous thing to have when we're talking the life of his daughter is in the balance.

On a bright side - his daugher has done 3 treatments and 1 more treatment to go. She has recovered well to this point. Sadly his wife and daughters (even the daughter whose life he's saving) do not speak to him and treat him like sh!t.

Anyway below is the update at the Canadian Supreme Court. Note the May 30, 2002 comment regarding Lawrence "exhausting" all his resources. If you feel like giving Mr. Robert Calvert, Lawrence's lawyer, a piece of your mind - please Email him at [email protected] . While you are at it, why not contact the Alberta's Children Services lawyer, Beverly Bauer, doing the second trial at 403-297-3360 and ask why the hell her Director and her are only calling one witness in a case that risks a young girl's life!!!!

I have a call into Carol Harington at the Canadian Press over this as well.

I think over the next decade, we here at JW.COM are going to be racking up a lot of frequent flyer miles....

But if that's what it takes to keep Watchtower from claiming ONE MORE YOUNG LIFE...then so be it.

There was some good news in this case on May 24, 2002 when Judge Binnie of the Supremes ruled denied Lawrence's Daughter (aka the Watchtower) an "interim" interim stay of execution and let the decision be made of the leave to appeal be made by the 3 supreme court judge panel. He she had gotten it she could have has her treaments stopped. But the court ruled otherwise and thus, saved her life.

    Hawk,

I wonder if some of us e-mailed Robert Calvert and pledged a sum of, say $25.00 (U.S.!!! ) per month towards Mr. Hughes' bill until it's paid off AND if we/you asked Ms. Carrington of Canadian Press to mention the SHUNNED FATHER FUND in her article (which she will surely write!!?!) would that work better towards renewed representation than our spending our money on travel expenses (sorry, Dung-of-the-big-heart! ) to Alberta even though Mr. Hughes, I'm sure, could use some moral support? (Some here might be able to afford both.)

A life is hanging in the balance, indeed. This father's outstanding love for his daughter must be supported!

Have the local churches in Alberta been informed of his need? I am sure that fund-raisers could be held on B.H.'s behalf, with the donated money also being sent to the properly legal Fund. Most churches here in the states help the Red Cross by sponsoring Blood Drives. Perhaps they could tie in a fund-raiser to their next blood mobile event with a plea as follows "YOUR donation could save B.H.'s life!" and then some information about the Hughes case.

    Just trying to brainstorm here...
