At least 14 people have died after a bus crashed into a ravine in Honduras.

Fourteen people were killed and 55 injured when the bus ran off the road and crashed into a ravine near San Juan de Opoa, Department of Copan, Honduras, about 310 miles north of Tegucigalpa.

AFP reports that according to officials, speeding may have been the cause of the crash.

According to Reuters, Moises Alvarado, head of the country's emergency services commission COPECO, said the bus was carrying 69 people when it crashed.

The passengers were members of a Jehovah's Witness church and were travelling from the northern icy of Choloma when the crash happened.

Zee News reports that around 50 rescue workers and volunteers helped to retrieve the bodies, and pulled the bus from the ravine with a system of makeshift pulleys.

The site also suggests preliminary reports suggested the crash was caused by speeding, exacerbated by wet conditions.

Local media reported the head of the National Transit Bureau (DNT), Quintin Juarez, as saying: "Once again, we must lament the recklessness of drivers."

The group's religious beliefs reportedly complicated treatment of the injured as blood transfusions are prohibited.

Fox News Latino reports that Honduran President Juan Orlando tweeted a message of condolence, writing: "We are at one with the families of the San Juan de Opos victims. God be with them and give them strength in this moment of sorrow."

Fire Department chief Edgardo Orellana told reporters that the number of dead "could increase" as a number of passengers were in a critical condition. Source: http://travel.aol.co.uk/2014/11/01/honduras-bus-crash-14-dead-55-injured/

A sad story, but yet more evidence that Jehovah does not protect you more if you go to assemblies. The report says that the driver was wreckless, was he a JW?

Sad news - no one deserves to die in such circumstances whether their bus is on the way to an assembly or a soccer match, what difference does it make why they were on the bus?

    This source, from Brazil, said:

" As pessoas que viajavam no ônibus pertencem a uma congregação das Testemunhas de Jeová e partiram da cidade de Choloma com destino ao Estado de Lempira, no leste do país, para pregar,"

"People who were traveling on the bus belong to a congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and left the city of Choloma bound to the state of Lempira, in the east, to preach,"

"God be with them and give them strength in this moment of sorrow."

God wasn't with them before the crash to protect them, no need to believe he'd be with them now to "give them strength".

God: always a day late and a dollar short.

Very sad that this occurs to anyone!

But I lament that witnesses will now use this as a story to boost "faith in jahs ressurection" rather that face up to the reality that this is just sadly what happens in life! And this is it...end of story....very sad...but that's it.

Oh, I wonder if this story will ever make it to jw.org??

    doubt it!

How terribly sad for these families. Yes, maybe some will wonder why they weren't protected, but that's really not the point. Death is tragic no matter why it happens.

I've ridden on the busses there, the drivers are crazy reckless. I thought the presidents words were kind.
