All you needed to do was to tell him to call the society and ask them if they were ever registered as a NGO.

Farkel, that was an excellent suggestion. Unfortunately, these things often are 20:20 hindsight. Besides, this elder had on such blinders, he wouldn't have done it, I bet.
This situation SO reminds me of 1984 by Orwell. It's been quoted on here about a year ago that an elder said "If mother (WT) said the sky was green, then the sky is green!"
Fortunately, not all JWs are so close-minded and stubborn. Many are thinking and perhaps this elder will do some questioning on his own (secretly, of course).
