My mother fixed roast lamb quite frequently and I love it.

While in Hong Kong during my service years, I enjoyed liver and onions at the British Enliste club freguently. Also, in the Pubs there one could order fish&chips. It was delivered wrapped in newspaper and was always delicious. Are fish&chips commonly wrapped this way?

    Mike,

This is my comment on your list plus some additions:

    1. Roast potato's. Wonderful, often add these when cooking special Sunday lunch

    2. Liver and onions. Disgusting, sorry.

    3. Yorkshire pudding. Excellent, easy to attempt, and I did a roast beef and Yorkshire puuding for a dinner group

    4. Devilled kidneys. Not something I'm familiar with.

    5. Steak and kidney pie. Used to like as a kid.

    6. Fish and chips. Wonderful, a rare treat, although I do like pan-fried walleye now.

    7. Breast of pigeon. Our cats used to enjoy that, especially the neighbors racing pigeons

    8. Vindaloo. Absolutely, the best food ever invented in this galaxy. Attempted at home but not as good as the real thing. Last ate this Feb 15, 2001 near Southhampton, England.

    9. Roast lamb. A rare treat

    10. Stilton blue cheese. A rare treat

    Additions:

    11. Crumpets. Never found locally. Have aquired recipe and treat myself occasionally. To Americans, a bit like pancakes, without eggs and with yeast. Needs time to ferment which makes them a bit fiddly for breakfast.

    12. Bacon sarnies. Even better on fried bread and smothered in HP sauce. Very rare treat in this form, heart-attack on a plate problem.

    13. Porkpies. Pork of high fat content in pastry topped off with fat. Never found locally. Last eaten June 1999 (Sainsbury's brand).

I can add more, maybe later. I am just too hungry now to type.

OK, I have a question. Saturday night is Britcom night in the Washington DC area. I was watching a rerun of Are you being served? and they made references to food that I don't understand.

What is "Toad in the hole"? and what is "Rissoles"? (sp?)

  • Angharad
    Angharad

Recipe for Toad in the Hole

    450g (1lb.) Sausages
    1 onion, chopped
    75g (3oz.) mushrooms, chopped
    125g (4oz.) plain flour
    2 eggs
    200ml (7 floz.) milk
    75ml (3 floz.) water
    2 tablespoons freshly chopped thyme
    salt and pepper to taste

Set oven to 200C (=400F). Cook sausages, chopped onion and chopped mushroom in a pan until browned, and place in a greased ovenproof dish. Place the flour in a bowl and add eggs, milk and water gradually, whisking all the time. Add the chopped thyme, salt and pepper to taste. Pour the mixture over sausages, and cook in a oven for 40 minutes until risen and golden.

Sorry dont know what Rissoles are.

Vindaloo is a type of very hot curry.
Dont you have indian resturants in the states?

I never imagined this type of poverty you poor souls.
Any way there are much better curries than a vindaloo,
Chicken tikka masala , korma , jalfrazi , balti , tandoori..
