You are right about the fact that they only pay lip service to the notion that family should come first. I remember Thirdsons quote, but you just try applying it and saying, no!
In fact ,the world of an elder is very macho and to admit that you were responding to your wife'e request would have you branded as a wimp.
This whole issue was stressed at the recent elders school and the elders were instructed to put the interests of their families before everything, even if it were to mean turning down congregation 'responibilities'.
This advise will of course be ignored as I have found that many elders convene and stretch meetings beyond the point of neccessity because they do not want to be at home with their families. Another common reason for missing fathers, is of course that many 'new' elders are hypnotised by their newly aquired sense of power, rather like putting a flashlight into the hands of a chimpanzee.
