This pic intrigued my wife... she called someone (a friend of hers) from the legal dept at Patterson about it. He claimed that the Society purchased the rights to the pic. If that's so... case closed.

That certainly sounds like a lawyer talking.
However, in 1982 The Watchtower didn't bother with purchasing the rights to a photo belonging to the Johnny Walker liquor company. The Watchtower just went ahead and used it!

The Watchtower changed the cover for this issue when the bound volume for 1982 was published.
Look at the "answer" that The Watchtower gave when someone wrote to them asking why this issue's cover was changed.
Notice that The Watchtower's response avoids answering the question concerning the specific issue.
Not very forthcoming on their part.

Whoever pointed out that The Watchtower was using the Johnny Walker photo should have waited until the 1982 bound volumes were published. There would have been no way for The Watchtower to cover things over then!
