A lot would depend on the child's age as to monitering their use of the internet sites. Most of the encounters from the show Dateline:To Catch A Predator are set up through common teenage sites. You do want to protect your children.

On the other hand, having raised teenagers, if they want to hide something from you, they can. I think your relationship with your children matters more than any "spying" you might do.

By the way, how do you delete cookies? I know how to delete files and browsing history. I'm not a kid, but must protect myself from spying by well meaning family members.

I have a good recommendation for those who want to visit apostate sites, which is exactly as I do. Use a normally unknown browser like Opera.

Remove it from the Windows Start menu, and only open it via Windows Explorer. No one will ever figure it out, and you don't have to worry about history, cookies etc.

To be even more paranoid, use Opera, and delete the history/cookies after every use. This is good too because a relatively savvy person will at least wonder why IE has its history deleted, like what are you trying to hide...

I can see that it could be a wise thing for parents to be watchful of their children that go onto the internet. Not because of a disrespecting the privacy, but to protect children from Predators. It's a mean world out there, and the internet has dangers that could harm children.

If your children are older, I believe that you should allow some measure of independence. Of course that is if you can trust your older child.

Monitoring is not new. Did you know that your employer knows every thing that you do on your computer that you use at your office, if you work at an office. They know of the websites, and emails that you receive and circulate. Big Brother, or Big Mother, or Big father is watching.

Husbands will spy on wives. Wives spying on husbands. Parents spying on kids. Kids spying on parents! The family computer will soon have 4 spy programs installed on it. Oh what a joy to be a j-dub!

Sounds like it's getting time to install a top-notch anti-spyware program and use it regularly. At this rate, it won't be long before the Watchtower Society starts installing spyware on people's computers to report to Brother Hounder if the user visits a questionable web site or attempts to use independent sources for research.

There are legitimate dangers with the Internet. Predators can be a threat, but to be sexually molested requires an actual physical meeting (which cannot happen directly through the internet). Sexually explicit messages, porn sites, and unapproved music (that is, which is too mature for the child) should be appropriately censored--it's the parent's job to determine what is appropriate and what is not. Obviously, precautions need to be taken to make sure a teenager doesn't mess up your computer with a bad program (many music swapping programs and games carry a payload of spyware). And you do not want your child to order tens of thousands of dollars worth of items without your knowledge or approval.

However, these things aside, children need to be allowed to grow up. If they are kept at Grade 1 forever or everything they do is censored, they are going to regret it, and might just ruin your computer on purpose out of vengeance. I recommend age-appropriate software from a worldly source (you might have to pay for it, but I would rather pay $30 to Microsoft than donate $??? to the Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund). Some programs are incorporated on your ISP--using them helps. And, a quick check on the history to weed out those seedy sites could be in order.

Above all, any physical meeting of anyone they meet online has to be supervised by the parent. That way, you know you will not be getting into a sticky situation. Of course, you should never allow the child to post sensitive information (identity theft is the risk), but that is sensible for anyone. That leaves the most common thing a computer is good for: research, entertainment, and exchange of ideas. There is nothing wrong with visits to apostate Web sites or independent religious sites. Most, if not all, apostate web sites are clean and safe.

It's not the internet that is dangerous.

    It's the people.

You know, I don't think it'll be long before they come out with their own blacklisted browser, like the Scientologists have.

Spyware. This is going beyond parental control software (a good idea for children), and is spying on your children. Maybe JW parents should tap the phone lines so they can listen in on all phone calls. There is also GPRS systems so you can track where they are at any point in time. Whatever happened to freedom of rights and releasing the spring.

Another good way to surf privately is to use a Linux distribution that can be run from a USB pen drive.

A good one is Pen Drive Linux but there are quite a few others.

You plug in the pen drive to any computer and run the Linux OS. All the files, settings, bookmarks, temporary files, cookies etc remain on the pen drive. Nothing is saved on the host PC. Your desktop always looks the way you want 'cos it's configured on the pen drive. Your favourite programs are on there too. It's a very useful thing if you're traveling and using net cafe's etc. No need to worry about virus's/spyware on the host PC.

No-one need ever know you've used the computer.
