Certainly Rutherford is not without culpability, but I seem to recall that there was one "falling away" around 1900 that was based primarily on the understanding of the "covenant," but secondarily upon CTR's use of the title "Pastor," which some found offensive and unscriptural. One person who parted with CTR over this was M.L. McPhail, who was CTR's first "pilgrim" and E. C. Henninges, who helped solve the problem of Rose Ball by marrying her.

Actually it was 1909, and it was regarding the New Covenant. Russell taught that it was future and to be made with the Nation of Israel. Henninges (Australia) and McPhail (Chicago) believed it was present and made with the Church, they also differed on the SIn-Offering and "The Vow".

Russell published letters in the WT where readers referred to him as "that servant." See, for example: 15 November 1915 Watch Tower, p. 351; Reprints 5804.) Russell did not stop others from referring to him as "that servant." Not to defend JFR, but why is this statement presented as questionable?

True, many believed he was and referred to him as such in letters to him. He never admitted to it ... but then again, he never disclaimed it. I personally believe he did believe he was "That Servant" but humility prevented him from publicly stating it.

Unlike the Governing Body of today who remind the rank and file everyday, never letting them forget it. Requesting complete obedience.
