As already stated here, participant on German board http://www.infolink-forum.de collected snailmail adresses of Elders and Kingdom Halls and informed them about the Watchtower's UNO relationship. This happened just before the KMS. Now the WTS has written a letter to all Bodies of Elders in Germany:

    Translation:

    TO ALL BODIES OF ELDERS

    Dear Brothers,

recently repeated inquiries reached us about a midleading report concerning a so-called membership of the Society at the United Nations. Of course, Jehovah's Witnesses and the legal corporations used by them have never been part of the United Nations. Because you may also be confronted with these questions we would like to forward you Headquarters' reply to to those inquiries:

"Our purpose for registering with the Department of Public Information as a nongovernmental organization (NGO) in 1991 was to have access to research material available on health, ecological, and social problems at the United Nations library facilities. We had been using the library for many-years prior to 1991, but in that year it became necessary to register as an NGO to have continued access. Registration papers filed with the United Nations that we have on file contain no statements that conflict with our Christian beliefs. Moreover, NGOs are informed by the United Nations that "association of NGOs with the DPI does not constitute their incorporation into the United Nations system, nor does it entitle associated organizations or their staff to any kind of privileges, immunities or special status." Still, the Criteria for Association of NGOs-at least in their latest version-contain language that we cannot subscribe to. When we realized this, we immediately withdrew our registration. We are grateful that this matter was brought to our attention."

We are convinced that these statements are helpful to answer misleading comments from opposers. Such attempts by opposers, to abuse God's people and the responsible brothers occured already in the 1st century and they were especially prophecied for the last days (2 Timothy 3:13; 3 John 9,10). But we are happy that we can have full confidence in the head of the congregation, Jesus Christ, and the brothers who are appointed by holy spirit (Ephesians 5:23; Revelation 2:1).

We send love and greetings while we and you keep the kingdom in the first place

    Your brothers
Religious Community of Jehovah's Witnesses in Germany, Inc.

Another nice evasion on the part of the WT. No, they were not a member of the UN in the same sense that a country is, but they were an NGO. Of course, they won't address that issue.

Yes, they are talking about misleading reports - but what is misleading is this letter.

But it's great to see that the letter campaign forced them to write a BOE-Letter. Maybe some elders get curious what's really behind the story.

GermanJW: Would you please translate the rest of that letter? They do seem to be mentioning something about NGO's.

    Thanks!

Actually in all fairness it would be good to have a translation of the rest of the letter, as ianao has mentioned.

If the letter goes on to explain their associate status with the DPI section of the UN, it is likely not as misleading as your partial translation would indicate.

That said, their official explaination is pretty weak regardless.

GermanJW: please do the translation of the rest of the letter. There's some mention of 'library' and stuff in the letter...

The rest of the letter is precisely the same official explanation that was sent out by Brooklyn, just translated (almost literally, as usual) to German. Library card for research, conditions for NGO association "at least in their latest version" aren't OK, so we chose to quit, yadda, yadda.

See http://www.geocities.com/plowbitch69/wtresponse.html - it's the second and third paragraph.

I edited the translation and pasted the missing part.
    But nothing new.
