Google, Apple & how Next Gen INTERNET will DECIMATE the Watchtower Society

Think the early 80's. One of the most important events in Watchtower history was the release of Crisis of Conscience by former Governing Body member F. Franz. Slow distribution of this "apostate" book lead to a minor loss of members. Mid 90's and mass distribution of the same information via the Internet assisted in the rapid and significant drop of growth of Jehovah's Witness from 6 % to around 2% per annum. (http://www.jwfacts.com/index_files/statistics.htm)

Out of touch Governing Body members and head-in-sand Watchtower followers seem ambivilous to the affect future Internet developments will have on Watchtower growth. A glimpse into the future include:

Combine these technolgies and very soon the Internet will morph from static verbal information pages to virtual reality. What will be the result?

The Watchtower presents what most of us now recognise as an embarrasing, ignorant, illogical message. People fall for the message through slow, insidious indoctrination techniques. First is several months of pleasant study of a book containing high level doctrine. Next comes meeting attendance and "love bombing". By the time an interested person becomes aware of deeper and more offensive practices and doctrines that are primed and somewhat immune to the rhetorical fallacy

A reason the internet is affecting Watchtower growth is that prior to effective indoctrination a Bible Study can learn other sides of the story. Imagine how it will be over the next decade. After receiving the first Watchtower and before the first Bible study the student will use the Internet to access information on the history of the Watchtower Society and doctrinal flaws. But more, soon they will also be able to travel by video to their closest kingdom hall and zoom into a recorded meeting, see an elder present a talk discussing evil "worldly people" and how close their destruction is and then a Watchtower study where Witnesses answer mudane Watchtower questions by rote. Without the emotion of human interaction a Bible Study will see these meetings for what they are, indoctrination sessions. The chance of converting an RV to a Bible Study will be remote, progression to a publisher even less likely.

I was speaking to a 24 year old internet geek today and he was saying that he is too old to be of the internet generation. The next generation live the internet. My 16 year old daughter is always connected. This is the generation the Governing Body do not understand and have no idea how to control. Either born a JW or met in the territory, it will be impossible to prevent current students and future generations educating themselves and learning both sides of the story, and education is the greatest threat that exists for any cult. Whereas current static internet information pages have educated the studious, live interactive visual presentations will prevent even the simplest, most gullible person falling for Watchtower lies.

All praise the internet! Mind you, I'm doubtful the WTS will ever record local meetings, lol. But I agree that soon, potential converts will be well versed in the art of internet research and able to find out for themselves the "truth" about the "truth". I still get shivers when I say the "truth" or type it.

Hi Sweetstuff, I don't expect JWs will post it, that will be done by people like us.

What inspired this thread was the google street view of tour de france. http://maps.google.com/maps/mpl?ie=UTF&moduleurl=http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/mapplets/tourdefrance2008/tourdefrance2008_en.xml&ll=45.460131,1.208496&hl=en&z=6&layer=c

You can now see a video of the route of the bike race. This was incomprehensible 2 years ago. Imagine what will be possible in 10 years. All it will take is a few "apostates" to video a few key talks and the embarrasment of Watchtower information will be out in the open for all to see in 3D.

Thank you for that overview! And I agree, information is the bane of their existence. "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!! IIIIII I am the Great and Powerful Wizard of Ozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" They keep booming from Brooklyn...hoping people will still be scared into submission by that. There will never be a time when there is an option to view the meetings from your home computer or on cable or something. You think meeting attendance is down NOW? LOL! Hell if I had an option to sit in my jammies on my couch with cocoa and watch the meetings from there instead of dressing three young kids and myself to the 9's and driving through snow and cold on school nights to sit in the next town...well the choice is obvious. And then try to find people who would have to be the ones going to the hall and doing ALL those parts every week to an empty hall. Plus like all cults they like to keep their little closed meetings secret shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Dont want worldly people hearing what they REALLY think of them LOL!

    Yep...soon. Not soon enough.

If by “decimate” you mean reduce by 10%, then I agree with you. If, on the other hand, you mean that the internet will bring an end to the Watchtower, then I think you overestimate the internet’s ability.

Yes it’s true that the internet has the ability to cripple their ability to recruit new converts, but how many people across the globe have access to the high-tech devices you describe? The underdeveloped world is a fertile breeding ground for Watchower-like religious movements. The immigrant population within the United States is supplying the Watchtower with vast numbers of converts-in-the-making. These people don’t have access to or don’t know how to utilize the internet in the ways that you describe.

Also, what about the people who are already within the Watchtower? Many of them take the Watchtower’s admonitions against the internet quite seriously and don’t allow themselves to view “apostate” material. Don’t forget the stupidity of the human spirit that allows people to deceive themselves in order to avoid confronting uncomfortable truths.

I wish the internet really could bring the downfall of the Watchtower, but I simply don’t see it happening anytime soon.

I enjoy your website tremendously, by the way. Keep up the good work.

I earn my living via the 'net and I'm not of the 'net generation. I see it's true power and for many it will herald in the end of their service to this false religion.

I know of a 9 year old born-in who is asking her parents how they know JWs are the only true religion. She has 'net access at home. How long do you think it will take her, when the answers from her parents no longer satisfy, to do a Google?

Let's not scoff at the notion of being able to get video from the KH in your locality. As has been pointed out, a camera phone can easily record an embarrassing portion of a WT discussion and upload the resultant video to the 'net, complete with GPS co-ordinates. Add a view meta tags...

The more information available in as many places as possible re. JW fallacies the more JWs will be reached.

very eloquent and timely post, JWFacts!

Can I use this on my website at www.freeminds.org ? Would even like a larger article! :-))

I know this for a fact, and am struggling to make web 2.0 and 3.0 work with limited resources so far. Mostly my lack of knowledge of hardware ands software. :-))
