"Evolution is JUST a Theory!"

I used to say this. And I feel a little sheepish.

    Check this out:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_tectonics

^ Plate tectonics (from the Late Latintectonicus, from the Greek: τεκτονικ?ς "pertaining to building") (Little, Fowler & Coulson 1990) [1] is a scientific theory which describes the large scale motions of Earth's lithosphere. The theory builds on the older concepts of continental drift, developed during the first decades of the 20th century (one of the most famous advocates was Alfred Wegener), and was accepted by the majority of the Geoscientific community when the concepts of seafloor spreading were developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

I have heard a lot of people say things like:

    "I don't believe in Evolution, it's just a theory."

The language in this statement can be switched with any other scientific "theory":

"I don't believe in Plate Tectonics, it's just a theory."

The first statement is fairly accepted among fundamentalist Christians. Yet the second one would get some laughs among all faiths.

    Just food for thought.

I didn't read either link due to time, but I'm hesitant to brush off Evolution or anybody's thoughts as short sighted any more. Fundamentalists will brush off and criticize science in a heartbeat. At the same time, often enough their doctrines on God, Christ and a million other things in the scriptures need reworked. JWs call it brighter light when the reality is they had a theory about "This Generation" that needed reevaluated. They had a theory on "The 144,000" that is in the process of being reevaluated according to the latest rumors. I'm not picking out JWs as if other religions don't do the same, because they do. The way I figure it may be better just to shut up rather than make a statement on whats fact or fiction.

Fundamentalists will brush off and criticize science in a heartbeat.

And the next heartbeat they will be using science to prove that God's creation is complex.

Come on now, be fair. Some "theories" are more provable than others, such as in cosmology, String theory vs M theory and the like.

    Deputy Dog,

Once something becomes a Scientific Theory it must be given credence. That's my main point.

No scientific theory should be "shrugged off" as a "hunch" or "educated guess."

    No matter how unprovable?

Have fun proving what happened before the big bang.
